Question about Sabbath and work

Recommended Posts

I started a new job this past August. It is M-F no weekends. Nothing was EVER mentioned about working weekends and I made sure and asked about that during the interview. Since it wasn't in the equation I didn't see why I should announce my Sabbath keeping to anyone. However, just this week my boss says that for the first time we would be working the weekends both before and after Christmas due to the transportation depts delivery schedule. See we have to be at the stores the day of the delivery to put the goods out since most stores do not have freezer storage space. Now I am in a position of telling my boss that I cannot work Saturday and possibly endangering my job. I did mention to her that as long as I wasn't working Sat I was ok with whatever schedule she came up with.

Advice anyone?

You are doing the Right thing Amelia and you will be blessed for it. God always finds a way of blessing adversity. Good comes out of Bad. You will be a witness for God.

Personally I have found that those in authority are impressed with an employee with convictions. And the fact that you demonstrate that you are willing to do anything as long as it is not on Saturdays ...

Well ... the boss should be impressed. But no matter what ... God WILL be glorified by and through you.

You will be in my prayers. I will pray that you remain strong and that God's will ... will be done.

May we be one so that the world may be won.

Sure, Ames. What I would do is point out that the question of weekend work had not come up in the past. Since it just now is coming up, then I would make my position clear. Without question, without flinching, take a firm and unequivocal stand--in a courteous and diplomatic way. I will be glad to assist you if you need backup. I have dealt with these issues in the past. Just let me know.

When I decided not to work on the Sabbath any more, I wrote a letter to my boss giving Bible reasons why I couldn't work on it. I showed him that I was serious and that I had given the issue a lot of thought. I've never been asked to work on Friday evening or Sabbaths again.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Amelia, maybe contact your local SDA religious liberty departmet of your conference office, for sugestions on how to approach this. If you can't get ahold of anyone call the GC at 601-680-6000 and ask to speak to that department. If nothing else you will feel encouraged because they are there to help you keep your job despite possible Sabbath issues. Keep us posted!

Melia,

If I was in that position, I would just tell my boss that I cannot work on that day because you are a SDA, and that is why you asked about it during your interview. I know that when I usually went for an interview, that's the first thing I would let them know, that I was a SDA and couldn't work from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. But, even then, my last job I had, they would require some Saturdays, and I had to refresh their memory and tell them I would not be able to come in. And they understood. Don't worry Melia, the Lord will be with you, and we will be praying for you....whatever happens happens ....if worse comes to worse,(which I don't think it will, IMO) the Lord has something better for you! :)

Be Kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another...

Make certain she understands that you will work on Sundays.
