Guest charis Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Just a word about donating money to breast cancer programs that promote free mammograms. Check out these programs. One of the biggest, the Komen Foundation spends more on breast cancer research than on mammograms for the needy who have no insurance. Another thing is that the programs that DO supply free *screening* mammograms will ONLY pay for the screening. If a problem is found, the patient is usually on their own to cough up the money for an ultrasound and/or biopsy, not to mention the high costs of surgery and follow-up radiation therapy and chemo. btw, it's interesting that Medicare will only pay $68 for a screening mammogram. That does not even pay for the cost of the exam. Every time an institution does a mammogram, it loses money. If a patient comes in having no insurance, the medical center will generally change well over $200, some over $300. Quote
