Why do Christians get on the nerves of so many unchurched people?

A new survey of U.S. adults who don't go to church, even on holidays, finds 72% say "God, a higher or supreme being, actually exists." But just as many (72%) also say the church is "full of hypocrites."

Indeed, 44% agree with the statement "Christians get on my nerves."

LifeWay Research, the research arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, based in Nashville, conducted the survey of 1,402 "unchurched" adults last spring and summer. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

I think it's a matter of expectations. For some reason, people are surprised to find that the church is full of hypocrites, or at least that the people aren't as perfect as they *should* be. But maybe we set them up with expectations that are too high by coming across like we have all the answers.

Well yeah, that and judging. People feel as though Christians are judging them, sometimes even if they're not... but that's a learned response.

sort of like if EGW is mentioned, everyone starts salivating.......erhm, well, not salivating. Maybe it's the fight/flight mechanism automatically goes into gear.

For contemporary people, spirituality is very personal, and too often Christians make comments and ask questions that make them uncomfortable, or just seem crude.

Another way of putting it is that for contemporary people, Christians are creepy, like the sleazy guy at the singles bar who starts making suggestive comments,or asking inappropriately intimate questions of women.

And it commonly happens here, that people essentially take spiritual liberties. The fact that they're clueless about this only makes the experience more creepy.

And what do you expect? Wouldn't you be disgusted with people who claim be born again and know & talk to God and yet continue to willfully/deliberately do the very same things the unchurched are doing?

and yet..... the people that I am more comfortable with are church members . and if I have to go to a 'foreign land', guess which church I ama gonna go to??? You got it...because we share a commonality....the bible...A friendly God, one who cares.....from there, I can make friends in that foreign land....

As for hyprocrasy, I try to make no pretense...I readily admit that I am a connundrum of behaviors, to the point of hyprocrasy and beyond... and you know what, those who care might talk with me about it, and those who don't, I get along fine with, and those who are uppity, don't bother comning around....and those people that interact with me, well..we git along just fine...
