Artists' treasures buried on Oregon coast

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. (AP) - About 70 floats are put out each week in Lincoln City through the winter.

And it's that time of year again, when coastal artists create thousands of beautiful, shiny glass orbs coveted by many collectors.

Then they abandon them on Oregon's merciless shore.

It may seem an odd juxtaposition, but it ultimately benefits beachcombers during Lincoln City's annual "Finders Keepers" event.

This year, 2008 glass floats will be hidden between the high tide line and the beach embankment on 7.5 miles of beaches between Roads End to the north and Cutler City to the south.

Organizers remind orb-hunters of basic beach safety: Never turn your back on the ocean; sneaker waves can be unsafe. Floats will not be hidden on the beaches during storms or in cliff areas.

If you find a float between now and Memorial Day weekend, call the Lincoln City Visitor and Convention Bureau at (800) 452-2151 to register your float.

Orb hunters are encouraged to collect litter on the beach while searching for their quarry.
