I agree with the points made - it is good to be clear about who a post is directed to. A number of times I have apparently offended people by posting something immediately after one of their posts, even though I was speaking to the room more generally. In this context it's also important to realise that there are a number of different preferences for how people see these forums. I have it so that all posts in a thread are just in a single vertical page, in chronological order, but it's alos possible to have it organised by threads and subthreads, so that a post that comes later might nonetheless be in response to a much earlier post in a different subthread. But I'd like to propose a different basic assumption. It seems more logical to me that, unless specified otherwise, posts are addressed to the whole community, even if they address points raised by a particular person. That seems to me the fundamental assumption for forums like this - if it's a conversation between just two people, take it to PM or email. It's also less awkward to, now and then, say 'this post is a specific response to Ms X' than to, basically every post, say 'this post is to everyone and no-one in particular'. What thinketh the room? It's fairly usual for new rules to be delivered as 'sticky' threads that aren't intended for discussion. I don't think locking the thread was at all intended to stifle discussion. I really like your idea about assuming all posts are for the entire group. I think that helps us all be more careful about what we say. There are times, though, when there needs to be better clarification about which post a person is responding to. Particularly if we are refuting someone's view, we need to be careful to somehow make it clear who said it. Most of the time, it doesn't matter too much, but there are times when I wouldn't want anyone thinking it was I who said such-and-such. Quote
