Woody Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 The 9th is an in your face Anti-Legalists day. Why? It is the end of Day Light Savings Time. Legalists are opposed to changing the time. This is because they think it is evil to change "times and laws". This is a law that changes the times and thus they are opposed to it. However it IS the law. And hopefully it will not be changed. Lil Star Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Arizona does not change the time. Does this mean that everyone except Arizona is made to follow the law? Are there laws that every other state in the union must follow that others do not? Quote
Woody Posted March 5, 2008 Author Posted March 5, 2008 Arizona has clout. John McCain is their Senator. Thus ... they can get away with it. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Amelia Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Seems to me that in another state, one county doesn't change their time. bonnie Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Arizona has clout. John McCain is their Senator. Thus ... they can get away with it. Probably not much to do with who has clout. Unless of course he may have the same clout in portions of Indiana. McCain was elected in 1986 and daylight savings time began in 1974. maybe it has more to do with the weather and not wanting to extend there extremely hot daylight hours. Amelia Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 From: infoplease.com Quote: The federal law that established "daylight time" in the United States does not require any area to observe daylight saving time. But if a state chooses to observe DST, it must follow the starting and ending dates set by the law. From 1986 to 2006 this was the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October, but starting in 2007, it is observed from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, adding about a month to daylight saving time. (See: New Federal Law.) Woody Posted March 5, 2008 Author Posted March 5, 2008 Yes. That is correct. When I was at Andrews ... Indiana received a lot of pressure to vote to be inline with the law. Finally ... the govenor pushed for this and it happened. But the Feds do have their ability to pressure a state. So far, Arizona has resisted the pressures. Finally ... the govenor pushed for this and it happened. But the Feds do have their ability to pressure a state. So far, Arizona has resisted the pressures. You may be right. Indiana does seem to have changed. Didn't realize you were a recent Andrews graduate as it appears the law changed in the last couple of years On October 30, 2005, at 02:00 DST, all areas currently operating on Daylight Saving Time adjusted clocks to 01:00. In Indiana, 77 counties were already operating at 01:00 EST and made no adjustment. However, five Indiana counties near Cincinnati, OH, and Louisville, KY, adjust from EDT to EST and five near Chicago, IL, and five surrounding Evansville, IN, adjust from CDT to CST. If the April 28, 2005, Indiana state legislation stands up, on April 2, 2006, Indiana will no longer be counted as one of three states which do not Spring ahead from "standard" to "daylight saving" time or Fall back from daylight to standard six months later. The Indiana Legislature voted to approve Daylight Saving Time for Indiana and to petition the US Department of Transporation to hold hearings to determine the location of the dividing line between the Eastern and Central time zones, relative to Indiana. Hopefully, what follows is not intended to represent the superiority of any position, but rather to illustrate the historical complexity of the issue. Woody Posted March 5, 2008 Author Posted March 5, 2008 No Problem. The apology was volunteered as is the poking fun at legalists. I have no problem doing both. fccool Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I think as people we do have lack of understanding what time is to begin with. The more I think about it, the more I find that my prior view of time is based on a cultural understanding of it. For example... Today, we have many "precise" time measuring devices... but we also find that time is "relative" in different places . Back in the Jesus' days they had no concern over minutes or seconds as much as we do. We tend to think of time as past, present, and future... but none of these really exist outside of now. We only live in ever changing now. The "thing" that we tend to think of as past... is actually here, but in a slightly different form. The future is simply an expected present. So there are no past or the future really. So there's no time. Just motion. I think understanding eternity is much more simple if you view time as a non-existent deal. Time that we think about as time is just a series of repetitive events that have a certain interval of a motion. You can't separate our idea of time from motion. No motion... no time. Our clocks measure the motion of electrons, or gears, days and seasons are measurements of planets going around. It's kind of a tree in a woods deal. Back to the topic. Someone asked me once... which Sabbath will you celebrate in New Jerusalem for a 1000 years, the one in Iowa... or the Jerusalem one? Also, there will not be any sunset of sunrise... I don't really know . And I'm not really that concerned over silly issues such as that one. We have people getting so concerned over getting the exact sunset times in minutes. I do find it silly in light of such things as midnight sun in Norway for example. Or, from personal experience... white nights in St. Petersburg. Technically, you can have a 48 hour Sabbath by following the sun on the airplane. If you travel in the other direction... you can have only an 8 hr one. So, in a way... Sabbath is relative to the location. To our Australian friend Bravus... we are technically a Sunday keeping SDAs LOL Quote

Lil Star Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 What about when you live in Alaska and there is no real sunset? What is the Sabbath time keeping time there? Quote
Dr. Shane Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Time is kept by the earth's rotation. The only accurate way to measure it is by the sun. The time lines are man's best attempt to keep time accurate. The further one gets away from their time line (into the time zone) the more inaccurate time is. For example the central time line falls between Illinois and Indiana thus one living in Nebraska would be considerable off. When the clock says 8:00 in Nebraska it is actually closer to 9:00 than 8:00 if the sun is used to determine the time. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... CyberGuy Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 What about when you live in Alaska and there is no real sunset? What is the Sabbath time keeping time there? It is when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky and starts to rise again that sunset has occurred. I traveled through Alaska several decades ago. We did not go that far north only as far as Fairbanksm but the sun went down at 10 pm and rose at 2 am. Even during the dark time it was twilight only. Never completely dark. Quote Riverside CA
Henry Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 but other countries also change times I know Canada... all these change for day light saying time. In Canada, the issue of time keeping is considered to be a matter of local interest and therefore within the jurisdiction of the provinces. All provinces except Saskatchewan use Daylight Savings Time. Saskatchewan does not except (I believe( for the municipality of Lloydminster, which is partly in Alberta. Quote
Henry Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 What about when you live in Alaska and there is no real sunset? What is the Sabbath time keeping time there? Alaska is a particularly tricky question, since prior to 1867, Alaska was on the Russian side of the so-called "international date line". If you follow the time-keeping from pre-1867, you would observe Sabbath on the day that today's Alaskans call Friday. If on the other hand you recognize the authority of the US federal government to "change times and laws" moving the dateline to the west if Alaska's shores, then Sabbath coincides with the east Siberian Sunday. Lil Star Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Strange how Saturday is left out of that equation. Either it is one day before Saturday or one day after Saturday. Kinda makes one think about it. Quote
