Global Warmin INDEED !!!!

Blizzard warnings for Ohio. In MARCH for cryin out loud !!!

What a winter. I lost count of the number of snowstorms weeks ago. All I know is that they seem to be lined up like planes approaching a runway, with no end in sight.

I want to note here that I am not complaining about the snow, only observing. I dare not complain, because sooner or later my whining will put me at odds with some venerable old codger who will attest to far, far worse winters in the "old days," and he'll have the photos to prove it.

Well, be that as it may, the report for tonight is for more snow. Or ice. Or snow and ice. It really doesn't matter anymore because this winter has become something of a buffet, where the wait staff fills the chafing dishes as quickly as the patrons empty them. My duty, then, as one who is resolved to stick it out is to curl up with a book and wait for the inevitable. But first I will light the fire – with a postcard from Orlando, Fla., that arrived just yesterday, asking how things are where I am.

extreme winters

Natural variations in weather can vary more than climate change signals, experts say.

By Peter N. Spotts

Science writer Pete Spotts talks about why meteorologists have a unique take on when winter begins and ends lasts.

Whatever global-warming models may suggest about the futures of Earth's climate, one thing is certain: Global warming never promised to eliminate winter, especially for those living outside the tropics.

From snowballs in Baghdad to severe blizzards in China, the past three months have seen their share of extremes:

•Greece and Turkey experienced severe storms in January.

•By some estimates, the storms in China flattened about 10 percent of its forests.

•Even tropical northern Vietnam experienced a prolonged cold spell in January that sent temperatures as low as 28 degrees F.

The extremes weren't all frigid. In Stockholm, Sweden's weather service posted an average temperature of 36 degrees F. this winter, which for weather-data purposes runs from December through February. That makes it the warmest winter since 1756. In January, Australia saw its temperatures rise 2.2 degrees F. above the 1961-2000 average, a record anomaly.

In the continental United States, things were a bit more sedate, despite the tornadoes that struck the Southeast in January and the snow that piled high in ski country. This winter ranked as the 54th coolest on record, though still 0.2 degrees F. above normal, according to preliminary figures released Thursday by the National Climate Data Center in Asheville, N.C. And it ranked as the 18th wettest winter, dropping an average of 2.7 inches of moisture on the country – just over half an inch above normal.

Still, weather and climate specialists caution against using a litany of the period's frigid bluster or relative warmth to draw conclusions one way or the other about global warming.

Well, then, I will be happy to fill that gap... I did NOT move south to have wind chills below freezing - in March! yucky

(I know, it's pathetic to complain about a little wind chill when much of the country has a lot worse, but whatever. I like to be warm.)

Ahahaha. I've misread the topic as GLOBAL WARMING NEEDED :). I thought someone would suggest to pump the CO2 to warm things up bwink

One more time: "Saying one cold day (or a few) shows that global warming is not happening is the same logic as saying one obituary proves world population is not growing".

Actually, it's worse than that - in the latter analogy the two things are more loosely linked. But as Neil posted, extreme weather is what we *expect* from global warming.

Before the flood we probably had a water vapor barrier around the Earth that created a greenhouse effect which made temperatures at the poles nearly the same as temperatures at the equator. We also had a much higher CO2 content in the air. Much the CO2 in living matter became trapped underground by the flood. After the flood, as new plants grew and animals reproduced, they used the CO2 left in the environment. As we now mine and pump out these fossil fuels and burn them, we are bringing the levels of CO2 back up to pre-flood levels but without the water vapor canopy. It certainly is an interesting epoch that we now live in.

Olger if you get to cold you can come to Southern California. We had temps up to 82 degrees today. I can walk with no coat on in evening as it is low 60's at that time which is comfortable if there is no wind.

Hadley was right

So, let me get this straight...You licked your finger to test the direction of the wind, and it froze....

Welll, why shouldn't freeze? You made it cold by wetting the darn thing....And the temperature extremes are a part of that global warming as the planet doesn't know where to put those large pockets of cold air.... You are fortunate...you got one.... :-)

There are essays written on global warming which show the direct correlation with the sun activity and temperatures on earth. It's commons sense. The sun is THE provider of heat. Even minor variations in sun activity would bring about temperature fluctuations.

I love the hypocrisy of Al Gore and other Global Warming reforms pushers who fly on private jets and own 30+ rooms mansions yet asking the third world to give up their development aspirations.

Global warming, hmmmmmm (Shane I just read your post and realized that I was basically posting the same thing you did, oops)

Earth made new with a barrier of water surrounding it. The earth is perfect.

The flood occurs and the barrier of water above the "firmament" burst open and the earth for the first time receives a lot of rain. The fountains of the great deep break open and huge fountains of water spray up about 20 miles into the atmosphere.

The result? NO trees anywhere, no vegetation anywhere, the sun now has greater access to the earth with the water above the "firmament" now on the earth.

Volcanoes, earthquakes that rearranged the continents and unparralled flooding. Death and desrtuction.

Sources of CO2 (during and just after the flood) the ocean, volcanoes, animal and humans. No cars then. But lots of CO2, huge amounts of CO2 and no trees what so ever to turn it into oxygen.

The earth, since the flood has been producing plants, trees, bushes etc.. and has been dealing with the balance of the air on earth. CO2 is heavier than air and does not go up, it comes down so the tree, plants etc, can convert it into oxygen.

We have 5900 years of vegetation grow since the flood and about 100 years of "deforestation". Even if we destroyed all the vegetation the earth would somehow adapt as it did after the flood. There was far more CO2 after the flood than there is now.

The day the flood occurred there was a lot of CO2 released and the earth somehow, with no plants or trees, was able to handle this.

The earth has been going through, God instituted cycles that vary in order to keep this planet here and livable until He see's fit to destroy it. The question we have to ask is this. Did God have the ability to know that all this was going to happen and could He have set something in motion before the foundations of the earth as he did with the plan of salvation to sustain planet earth?

Church to step up climate fight

By Richard Black

Environment correspondent, BBC News website

Climate impacts such as drought may affect the poor first

Leaders of the influential Southern Baptist community in the US have declared their churches have a duty to stop climate change.

In a statement, senior figures in the movement said evidence of man-made global warming was "substantial". Southern Baptists are the largest protestant group in the country.

They follow other religious figures, including British bishops and leaders of US evangelical denominations, in backing action to curb climate change.

Southern Baptists are a loose confederation of churches grouped under the Southern Baptist Convention, and no-one speaks for the movement overall. We can do better

Leaders' declaration

But the 40-odd signatories of the statement, A Southern Baptist Declaration on the Environment and Climate Change, include several of its most influential figures.

"We believe our current denominational engagement with these issues has often been too timid," they write.

"Our cautious response... in the face of mounting evidence may be seen by the world as uncaring, reckless and ill-informed. We can do better."

Previously, the movement has questioned the validity of evidence for human-induced global warming.

How would Jesus vote?

The belief that Christians have a duty of stewardship to the planet is the main reason why religious groups are increasingly favouring climate action.

What would Jesus drive?

It was articulated formally in a 1993 document from the US evangelical church network, the Evangelical Declaration on the Care of Creation.

A second factor is the belief that climate impacts will fall disproportionately on the poor, and that Christians in rich nations have a duty to prevent this if they can.

Some Islamic leaders have also warned that environmental issues threaten the natural world and the future well-being of human society.

How much influence these initatives have on the electoral process is another matter, although some religious leaders in the US believe Republicans can no longer automatically rely on getting the evangelical vote.

While the traditional Republican line on issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage has great appeal for many churchgoers, religious leaders who preach involvement in environmental protection and global poverty believe their congregations may increasingly find policies to favour in the Democrat camp.

The Southern Baptist Convention has a membership of more than 16 million people.

Apparently, Baptists aren't the only environmentally conscious people:

Quote:
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Thou shall not pollute the Earth. Thou shall beware genetic manipulation. Modern times bring with them modern sins. So the Vatican has told the faithful that they should be aware of "new" sins such as causing environmental blight. --Vatican lists "new sins," including pollution, Philip Pullella
