Moderators LynnDel Posted March 29, 2008 Moderators Posted March 29, 2008 Google has its lights out today. This is why: On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation. Does turning off your lights mean turning off your computer? That's what I want to know! Quote LD

FoundByLove Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation. Turning off one's lights tends not to actually save much energy as compared to, say, turning off other major house-hold appliances (refrigerator, oven, older computer, etc). So, how does it make sense to have everyone do one thing that doesn't save as much energy as other things they could have done... And then hold major events where tons of energy is going to be expended just to hold those events...??? Kinda reminds me of earth day in San Fransisco back in, I think it was 1993 or so... After the festivities were over and everyone had gone home... Tons of Earth Day fliers littered the park almost like freshly fallen snow, right along with popsicle sticks and other assorted trash left behind by the oh so very "green" people. Heh. Quote

FoundByLove Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 *Grins* I agree And yeah, it's all symbolic, I just find it amusing that the purpose can get lost in the symbolism. Quote
