Guest truthseeker007 Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 The bible says that when you get baptised you receive a gift from the holy spirit. When i look at great man in the church, they all seem to be intelligent and are able to say the right things at the right time. On my own strength i sometimes have to think a lot about things. I wonder what kind of gifts are there? Are there also people in the church that have the capacity to lay hands and heal the sick? What kind of gift would you like to have? Quote
Woody Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Once we are baptized we receive a special gift of the Holy Spirit Seeker ... you are correct. This gift allows us to do two things that are very important. One ... It allows us to better understand scripture. Two ... it helps us to overcome sin. What some have backwards is that they think we are suppose to overcome sin BEFORE we receive this gift of the Holy Spirit and have full understanding of God without this gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is given at Baptism for a reason. And it points out that we should not be expecting overcoming of sin BEFORE the baptism. For good works without the Spirit would be just empty works done on your own power. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Stan Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 John the Baptist had the gifts before Jesus Baptized him. Baptism is a public declaration that there has been a significant change in your life, the same as a marriage Ceremony, funeral etc. etc. ( I know many theologians do not agree with me on that, so i must be correct) God give gifts to unworthy sinners that have never been dunked. Guest truthseeker007 Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Amelia are you blind? You are given the gift of posting new topics all over the place. You are top poster Nr. 1:) No seriously i think most people don t know what they got untill it is gone. For example, me as a child i loved to be with other people and love them, but now i have been lonely for many years now and i feel dead inside. Boy i wished i could return to my childhood. I think i am going to get myself baptised very soon. But i am afraid that even with the help of the holy spirit i continue to sin. Furthermore i don t know how a baptism exactly works. I love to share my life story with the church people, but doesn t it matter that i am going to cry then? I think i ll burst out into tears because all of the pain that i have been through. Quote
Amelia Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Quote: Furthermore i don t know how a baptism exactly works. Well, hummm how to answer that question. Many people are baptised at the end of one of the many revelation seminars offered across the country. Some people approach the pastor of the church that most fits their needs. Then meet with either the pastor or assoc pastor for studies leading to baptism. Personally I did the later. I was baptised by Harvey Corwin. (you may or may not recognise his name: http://www.lovetakestime.com/index.html) In fact, I wasn't baptised until I had been attending an SDA church for a time and even after being married in the SDA church. Then one Sabbath your name is brought before the congregation and accepted for baptism and membership. Then on another Sabbath you will get dunked and eat cake after.
