IMHO, a bigger issue is this: What do you think of Christ? Our answer to this question will also serve to answer the issue/question of pain and suffering.

True Stan. Millions have turned away from God on the excuse of pain & suffering. The enemy causes these things through sin, and then lies to us that none of these things would happen if there was a God. The truth is - none of this would happen if the enemy was gone.

Indeed pain and suffering are contrary to the worlds progress in everything from science, even to religion. We have got machines to ease our work and bring greater productivity, even automations that may be left behind unattended. We have got better statistics upon the population's health, longer span of lives, less deaths due to birth deliveries and so forth.. We have even got better quality in our lives from vitamins to spas, now available to almost anyone. For many, modern life has become a life of ease and comfort, even contributing to the public concern of obesity (in your favored countries ofcourse..). But anyway, pain and suffering has never been welcomed since ages back in history, too.

Coming to think of it, I believe the problem is not upon pain and suffering but upon despair, of giving up or giving in. People should not be tortured by the idea of immediate perfection... such as "with God's help nothing is possible" .. causing a pointing finger to be directed to the poor soul needing help where instead, getting blamed. The Truth should be introduced as a life-going journey or path, with an ongoing utmost intense honesty with oneself.. not for guilt but for constant awareness of the truthful reality and learning to live with it every moment. Its like chipping off a mountain and learning to be content with a days progress of perhaps, a basketful of rocks, else one could, instead hew down oneself instead of the mountain, out of dissatisfaction..

We, SDAs (and others too) are sooo demanding beyond a path's progress of many, causing many to despair (hopefully, temporarily) but in the big picture it discourages the common non SDA public.

Salvation is God's work, our part is just to help or lend out a helping hand and become as Christ that caused not the faintest flame to go out...

Some say that playing video games trains people to not give up easily... perhaps playing video or computer games should be also part of our religious upbringing...
