Favorite Adventist Charities

Let's leave out some of the most common like the local conference, local church and (for most of us) Club Adventist.

I like Asian Aid, founded in Australia, initially for Korean orphans but now more in Southern Asia. Besides educating needy children, in Nepal there is a service providing surgery for very needy women. The fact that the founders are friends of mine - I got to know them many years after the founding of the organisation - has only a little to do with it. :)

Out of that list, the only one I have given to is ADRA.

I have also been known to support Asian Aid (mentioned by Nan) and International Children's Care, which my brother is involved with.

Apart from that, most of the charities I support are not Adventist. (much to the dismay of some of my fellow church members, who try to convince me that as an Adventist I should only support Adventist organizations.)

Those are all great charities. There is one that I actually work with and have been involved with since its beginning in 1998. It is Maasai Development Project -- it supports lay pastors and literacy teachers, as well as rescue young girls from early marriage and FGM (female gential mutilation). Adventist Frontier Missions .... AFM ..... is a great ministry. We support it because of the Christ like methods they have their missionaries employ. They live in the culture and try to understand and support it. They meet the peoples needs. They are culturally sensitive and do not hit people over the head with Adventism. A Great Ministry to support. It is based in Berrien Springs Michigan. They have missionaries in many unestablished countries around the world.

I like this one, also, and have given to it. Currently a young person I know is serving in Albania.

Thinking on Aldona's note (and I have an Adventist son who is employed by Samaritan's Purse) I am thinking it is a great witness to support worthy causes even if they are not Adventist.

Having been a former Student Missionary .... I like to follow the experiences of student missionaries. So, I've read of her experiences in the AFM magazine. The last one ... April 2008 magazine had a two page article written by Elizabeth. You should check it out if you haven't. She sounds like a dear.

You might be interested to note that the Umatilla,Fla. had a direct Skype telephone call to "their AFM missionary" in Albania

during Sabbath School last Sabbath. The connection was so clear that it sounded like they were in the next room. The beauty of SKYPE is that they talked for about 20 minutes and it did not cost a dime.........in fact, they left the connection open so that the missionaries could listen in to the SS lesson from their home church.They want to someday do it live with camera.

I am curious as to why you would choose to support programs outside the church if the church is ministering to the same types of areas that appeal to you. I see Christian Blind Missions on your list. What is wrong with Christian Record Deaf/Blind Services for example?

exactly the kind of question I get asked by fellow Adventists...

And my final answer is "Because that is where I am impressed to send my money." If that is a problem, you will have to take it up with the still small voice that is doing the impressing.

Other answers may include:

Because I believe in supporting good works on their merits regardless of the religious affiliation of those doing them or the recipients.

Because I am a Christian first, and an Adventist second.

Because I believe these particular organizations are doing a great job, and I believe in what they are doing.

Because each organization is unique and fills a particular need that no other organization can.

To use your example:

Christian Record Deaf/Blind Services provides free Christian publications, reading services, scholarships, camps and other programs for people with sight and hearing impairments.

Christian Blind Mission is an international organization that provides medical services, surgery to restore vision or hearing, rehabilitation, as well as services to the disabled and disaster relief.

They have a different purpose. Not to say one or the other is better, just that one in particular and not the other is where "the still small voice" told me to send my money.

The fact that Christian Record does not exist in Australia, and I had never heard of them and had to look them up, does not help either.

If you send your money where God places it on your heart to send it, and I do likewise, and everybody reading this does likewise, then the thousands of worthy causes throughout the world will all be well supported.

However in this thread I was trying to limit the focus to Adventist ministries because most of us here all receive requests from these same group of ministries.

That's fine..It is only you that has to explain to the Lord where you have sent "His" money.. My view is that if "His 'Remnant' " is providing for what I think are specific needs then I would support that program first. We can generally rationalize anything we wish so I you think that a "still small voice" is urging you to send "His" money somewhere...go for it....

Yes I do have an exclusive view of who are His Remnant or else seven generations of us would not be/have been hanging around the Adventist Church for lo these many years.

Speaking of Adventist Frontier Missions, can anybody explain why they have to raise their own funds, and get no financial support from the General Conference? (Or at least so it seems, from their literature.)

We have this "Global Mission" Department at the General Conference. Why does none of its money go to AFM??

I also spread my money around. I give to Adventist charities for the people and others like The Humane Society of the United States, Oregon Humane Society and The Audubon Society for the animals.
