Lil Star Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Volunteer at Goose Hollow Family Shelter Since 1994 we have provided temporary emergency shelter to families with children in the downtown Portland area during the cold winter months. Capacity at the Shelter is 24 people, or 8 families. Last year, the Goose Hollow Family Shelter helped over 55 families find shelter during the cold, winter months. We make a difference in the lives of families with children because of you! The following volunteer opportunities are available every night from November 1 through April 30: LIGHT MEAL PROVIDER (6:30-8:00 p.m.) Providing a light, nutritious dinner each evening is an important amenity for families after a long day. Volunteers who bring our dinner meal find this is a fun way to interact with parents and children and to better acquaint volunteers with the shelter operation. We invite you to come eat with our families and volunteers. OVERNIGHT HOSTS (8:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.) Over-night hosts may arrive between 7:00 and 8:00 each evening to spend the night, greet parents and children, assist families with personal needs, and wake them in the morning for a continental breakfast before they leave for school, work or SafeHaven. EXTRA HAND (6:30-9:30 p.m.) Being one of our extra hands is an easy way to become more familiar with the shelter, and also an excellent first step to hosting overnight. Extra hands help facilitate a welcoming atmosphere for families as you accompany guests while doing laundry, help organize donations and assist with special projects. KID TIME HOST (6:30-9:30 p.m.) If you enjoy interacting with children we would love to have you come spend the evening. We find that providing nightly structured kid-friendly play, crafts, or stoytime is a fun way to occupy the children after dinner and give parents a bit of a break. Shelter hours are 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. and we are open every night from November - April. For more information about the Goose Hollow Family Homeless Shelter visit their website at: http://www.fumcpdx.org/goosehollowfamilyshelter Or contact the Shelter Director, Brandi Tuck, at 503-228-3195 x215 . Sign Up Below Friends and Groups may wish to join together and adopt a night to volunteer - filling all positions. We encourage more than one person to sign up for each position. Volunteer needs for the next four weeks are outlined on the chart below. Empty spaces represent positions that have already been filled. To get more information or to volunteer for an available position, click on one of the links below. The final night at the shelter this year is April 30. Lil Star Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Today I have only spent a few minutes online to find these. I will do more later as I was supposed to be to work at 7 this AM. This was important to me as people seem to think they aren't in this area. NOW they can not say that. I have given numerous places one can volunteer, donate or what have ya. This is just a start, just think if only a handful of people from a church, several churches all donated or volunteered their time how many people would come to our church? When I was a young child, I attended a church where a gentleman by the name of Pastor Rustad preached. That was the best pastor of all time in my book. He taught us kids the real meaning of Love one another. He didn't just stand at the pulpit preaching, he got into the pathfinder clubs, he got us out into the community helping those that could not help themselves, he got himself out there with us. He did ingathering with us. *I* believe he was the first and foremost reason why I am still an SDA. He treated EVERYONE with the same respect he wanted for himself. He assisted so many. I remember one time in our old church where there were two people who came in after our night service started and they were dressed in rags. EVERYONE turned around to stare at them. They sat in the pew next to our HUGE family of 9 children with our mom. They sat there and listened to the sermon. I remember after the sermon the pastor got down and shook their hands. Treated them as they should have been treated. Just like one of the fold. Talked to them and after that, I do not know what happened. What I do know is that they became members. They started coming in nicer clothes. All they wanted was for someone to care for them as a person, not what they could bring to the church. In my eyes, I feel that they were little angels sent from God to show us that everyone needs someone. Everyone needs help. As they would come to church, they would start sharing their past with some. I learned that they were homeless and that the clothes they came in at the beginning were their very best clothes. They were tattered, torn, they were disheveled, you could see they tried to comb their hair but I doubt they could very well because it was always messed up. Very few people looked at them in our service with closed eyes like... uh oh no, some of 'them' came in. Most opened their arms to welcome them into our church. Sometime later, they became members. We were grateful that we had the opportunity to have met them. Quote
