CyberGuy Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 During the 1977 gas crises I went to see a movie and when I drove home I ran out of gas. Now I I had just refilled my tank the day before. After I had my dad come and give me a little gas and I found my gas cap gone. I went to refill my car and went back to the theater and found the gas cap on the ground with a small puddle of fuel. Those jokers did not even leave me enough fuel to get home which was three miles away. Be warned. Gas siphoning is on the rise. If you own an SUV they will even go under the car and drill a hole in the gas tank to drain your tank. Hard to do with smaller cars. You should all invest in a gas cap lock at the very least. People are getting desparate and they will resort to even stealing gas from peoples own driveways now. Quote Riverside CA
Kountzer Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 The gas tanks on most newer vehicles has a screen that will block a syphone hose from getting to the gas in the tank. You must own a much older vehicle. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass

CyberGuy Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 (smile) Methinks you should read cyb's post more carefully. mel LOL. Yeah I was about to say the same thing. That happened to me back in 1977 way before they had those screens. My 2003 Saturn does have that screen in it so one cannot siphon gas out of that car. Most newer cars have that feature in response to past gas shortages. That is why thieves are resorting to cutting the fuel line or punching a hole in the gas tank to get the fuel on the newer cars and S.U.V's. Quote Riverside CA
Neil D Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 In case anyone is interested, the price of gas, unleaded, 87, is $4.25 at Exon in Coos Bay, Oregon... It is also $4.17 in Reedsport, and $4.12 in Florence. Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
Amelia Posted June 19, 2008 Author Posted June 19, 2008 When I was in Newport on Monday all the Shell stations were $4.36. The Space Age in Lincoln City was $4.25. I filled up there. Amelia Posted June 19, 2008 Author Posted June 19, 2008 Gas thieves steal 300 gallons from Rose City Golf Course Wednesday, June 18, 2008 By KGW Staff Thieves stole about 300 gallons of gas from the Rose City Golf Course, officials said Tuesday. The golf course is owned by the city, which means taxpayers are stuck with the bill. Greenskeepers said that when they arrived Tuesday morning at the course, they found the 300-gallon gas tank that had just been filled was empty. A hole had been cut through the fence and hoses were left behind. The thieves made off with nearly a ton -- more than $1,200 worth -- of unleaded gasoline. CyberGuy Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 The article I have a link to above told a story of someone hijacking a gas tanker truck at gunpoint and making off with the entire shipment. We are going to see more of this stealing gas as prices go up and people get more desperate. Quote Riverside CA
CyberGuy Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Your car is not even safe in your own driveway. People are reporting gas lines cut and gas tanks punctured and gas drained even in their own driveway. As Gas prices approach $5 and higher we will see a lot more of this. Quote Riverside CA
Amelia Posted June 20, 2008 Author Posted June 20, 2008 Oregonians cut gas use by 10 million gallons June 19, 2008 By WAYNE HAVRELLY for Kgw.com New information tonight shows that Oregonians are driving less and burning less fuel. It's a major shift in the way we drive and KGW discovered data that shows what’s really happening on state roadways. Much of the data comes from devices called loop detectors. You can find them in the pavement on every freeway off ramp. They count vehicles and determine how many miles we drive each year. Carl Henrikson is driving from Portland to the Salem area and said, “I have the feeling as I look at traffic that there are fewer people on the road. It just appears to be a little less crowded than it used to be.” Oregon transportation officials say it’s more than a feeling. “The data shows we're driving fewer miles and we're using less gas,” said Dave Thompson with the Oregon Department of Transportation. ODOT Statistics prove it. Oregonians drove 22 billion highway miles in 2007. That sounds like a lot, but it's actually almost 1 percent less than we drove in 2006. Oregon also tracks the amount of fuel sold each year and those numbers are also down. In 2007 Oregon drivers burned about 10 million gallons less than the previous year. Again that’s a drop of about one percent. “That data only goes through 2007," Thompson points out. What’s happening now in 2008 with the high gas prices, we strongly suspect more of the same and maybe even bigger drops in gas consumption and miles driven.” Many drivers tell Newschannel 8 they're slowing down to save money on fuel. Mark Hayden and his family are pulling sheep to Eugene for an annual show. They’re now driving 60 mph instead of 70. Hayden said, “It’s just extremely expensive we almost didn’t go this year.” State police say they haven't noticed a drop in speeding tickets. However, they have hired more officers, so statistics could be misleading. Bottom line, the latest statistics do show that Oregonians are starting to drive fewer miles and burn less gas. CyberGuy Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Ohio station advertises gas for $9.09 a gallon WEST CHESTER, Ohio (AP) - Motorists hope one Ohio service station's mistake wasn't a sign of the future. For several hours on Thursday, a Speedway station in the Cincinnati suburb of West Chester advertised regular for $9.09 a gallon on a sign high above an interstate highway. Motorists couldn't miss it as hundreds sat in traffic in the area following a crash on I-75 involving three tractor-trailers. All one driver could say was, ``No way,'' then adding that he wanted to go back to California. The gas station fixed the numerical error late in the afternoon, putting the cost at $4.09. One motorist grumbled that the sign will probably show the much heftier price for real before long. Information from: WLWT-TV, http://www.channelcincinnati.com Quote Riverside CA
