Dr. Shane Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 55 mph saves gas. I think it is a good idea inside metropolitan areas. Driving 65 or 70 doesn't get a person across town that much faster but it does take more gas. Rural interstates should remain with a 70 mph speed limit. 55 mph slows down trucks delivering products. What I do favor is an annual federal tax on cars and trucks that are larger than a given size. For example: Engines 2.5 liter and smaller are tax exempt. Engines 3.5 and greater than 2.5 pay a $150/year tax. Then add an additional $150 for each additional liter. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... CyberGuy Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Here are the lyrics to the Sammy Hagars song. One foot on the brake and one on the gas, hey! Well, there's too much traffic, I can't pass, no! So I tried my best illegal move A big black and white come and crushed my groove again! CHORUS: Go on & write me up for 125 Post my face, wanted dead or alive Take my license n' all that jive I can't drive É 55! Oh No! Uh! So I signed my name on number 24, hey! Yeah the judge said, "Boy, just one more I'm gonna throw your ass in the city joint" Looked me in the eye, said, "You get my point?" I said "Yeah!, Oh yea!" CHORUS II: Write me up for 125 Post my face, wanted dead or alive Take my license, all that jive I can't drive É 55! Oh, yea! I can't drive 55! (four times) Uh! (Solo) When I drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer. And I can't get my car out of second gear. What used to take two hours now takes all day. Huh - It took me 16 hours to get to L.A.! CHORUS: Go on & write me up for 125 Post my face, wanted dead or alive Take my license n' all that jive I can't drive 55! No, no, no, I can't drive...(I can't drive 55!) I can't drive... (I can't drive 55!) I can't drive 55! Quote Riverside CA

Dr. Shane Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 People want cheap gas but they don't want to give up anything. The fact is the "cause" of expensive gas is "cheap" gas. When gas is cheap people buy big cars and drive them fast. That increases demand. When demands exceeds supply the market responds by increasing the price. It isn't just the developing economies of India and China driving up demand. It is SUVs and driving fast too. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Moderators LynnDel Posted May 24, 2008 Moderators Posted May 24, 2008 55 mph? It feels like crawling when I try it on the freeways now -- and dangerous! OT - Do cars sold in Canada have a kph speedometer? More OT: When the civilized world changes to a base ten time system (never) I will be happy to go metric in every other measurement. Quote LD
