Smilies can be useful in increasing the understanding of readers by demonstrating attitude of the one writing the post ("a picture is worth a thousand words," and all that), helpful since real facial expressions are missing. Animated avatars can be visually distracting, and if they really bother you, Glad, you can always put a post-it on the upper left corner of your computer while you're reading Redwood's posts. Actually, Redwood's avatar isn't that animated - gives you a sense of freedom and the open road (great feeling!), and it's nothing like that annoying hit-the-monkey ad - which I am thrilled to see is no longer showing up on millions of sites.
