"All of Mrs Jones is dead, but not all of the class of dead people is Mrs Jones"

That's Monty Python's memorable illustration of the logical principle that 'X is a Y' does not logically imply that 'Y is an X'.

Why is this important? Because so often in discussions here we see those texts about 'the wisdom of God is foolishness to unbelievers' used as a trump card. But logically 'all of the wisdom of God appears as foolishness to unbelievers' does not imply that 'everything that appears as foolishness to unbelievers is the wisdom of God'.

There's plenty of real foolishness in the world. Every example I cite will upset someone, but the Reverend Wright's theory about the government intentionally creating HIV to target blacks is probably a good one. Sure looks like foolishness to me: doesn't mean it's the wisdom of God.

So let's apply those texts only where they really apply.

Truth is important
