And you work doing what again????

Ok, we, who wonder this BBS, don't know what you do....Let's face it, we work at our lives, not yours.....We have families to maintain, keep track of, favorite past times to wallow in, friends to keep honest, and co-workers to pass jobs onto.

So to better emphathize with you [or better yet, {ahem}make fun of you], write up about what you do...

What makes your work fun? How much can a new person expect to get paid ? How much can one expect to get paid when 1] the economy tanks, 2] you have been at the same job for 20 years, 3] you brown nose the boss. What do you hate about your job? What makes it interesting? What type of people are we going to see in your profession?

Answer any one, or all or make up your own questions....but tell us about your job...

I am a gov't worker. I've been working for the state of Texas since 1990. For the past 5 years I've been working in a very busy driver license office.

I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.

I'm a mom. No pay, no vacations, no fun. No seniority. No respite. (anybody want to volunteer?)

I hate being yelled at, kicked, hit, threatened, called ugly names, knocked down, disobeyed constantly, not believed by acquaintances, etc., etc., etc.

For the past 12 years I have been an early childhood educator, working in the field, shaping and training young minds to think for themselves and to enjoy learning simply for pleasure. I am the Chief Financial Officer and Advisor for a local computer business, as well as the Transportation Specialist. I am a Disease Intervention Specialist and Physical Therapist as well as a Sanitation Engineer. I also work heavily in animal control and Telecommunications.

I wouldn't trade my job for anything, although the pay isn't exactly calculated in dollars and cents, it is priceless.

I take this saying to heart everyday: God doesn't call the qualified, HE qualifies the called.

I'm not sure what I am these days. I've been a teacher then transitioned to the conference for Children's Ministries. These days I'm confused with my current responsibilities which include Sabbath School, Children's Ministries, Personal Ministries, Stewardship, Single Adult Ministries, Family Ministries along with Men's Ministries, SAGE BC, Regeneration Ministries and Church Consults. You can be sure, I only skim the surface and that can be very discouraging. Fortunately, I have Coordinators for Children's Ministries, SAGE BC, Men's Ministries, and Regeneration Ministries or we'd never survive. But, God is good and directs and empowers.

And to return to the topic, I work in OBGYN which is why in other threads I may speak of having just had a baby or 3. A rewarding but sometimes frightening occupation - joy but potential to do long term damage if things do not go right. I enjoy my colleagues, both medical and nursing/midwives, and I have built up great friendships over the years. The other down side is trying to look interested and intelligent to my patients if I have been up most of the night before. Fortunately that is relatively rare.

I'm an elementary special education teacher. My students primarily have dyslexia and other reading problems. Helping these children learn to read is vastly rewarding. Today was my last day of school!

Wow! This thread is great. Each post seems to open up a topic which makes me want to ask a question.

How can we ask questions about these interesting professions without going off topic for the thread?

Why couldn't a conference have a woman Ministerial Secretary/director? Well.....a Ministerial Secretary/director is the 'pastors' pastor' and are usually one of the top, most qualified pastors. How many women pastors have we had who have been a pastor for many years and is considered one of the very best pastors of a conference? (By the way, I am not and have never been a pastor.)

I should have written, Secretary for the Ministries I guess bwink

No I'm not the secretary for those ministries Nan, but, rather the director for those departments. That makes somewhat of a difference to my secretary but maybe not me.

I think everyone knows what I do, but in the spirit of playing along... I teach teachers a little about teaching. They learn most of it when they start teaching, and often they and everyone else don't value what we teach them at uni. Most days I manage to persist in believing that it's valuable, and hoping that people will develop a richer understanding of what teaching and learning are all about.

Truth is important

Here's a Dyxlexish translation of what Neil said, and an English answer:

Neil said:

Dyslexish: Wle, prvneting you wut kwshchcn form aksing?

Answer: She has good manners, better than mine, and wants to keep this thread on track. And so do I!

As to Bravus's statement regarding teachers learning on the job, my frustration with my education as a teacher at a state university was that we spent many hours on the basics of math, reading, science, etc., and one course on the fundamentals of pedagogy, and only one class session on classroom management. All of us really did learn on the job - which is one of the best ways to learn, but also is one of the reasons for the high attrition rate of teachers during their first few years in the classroom with all those Bart Simpson wannabes.

My statement that yesterday was my last day is literally true. I decided to retire. Woohoo!!!

Many here also know what I do but there may be lurkers that don't.

I am a commercial construction project manager. I got my BS degree in Construction Management and Business Administration from Minnesota State University, Mankato. I served five years in the Army Engineer Regiment as a National Guardsman. Worked as a roofer, crane operator, carpenter and equipment operator in a rock quarry during college breaks. I have been working in management since 1998. I build mostly schools both new and additions. I have also built hospitals, clinics, churches, libraries, apartments, telecommunication centers and office buildings. I have been indirectly involved with the construction of airport facilities, nursing homes, retail stores, factories and hotels.

85% of the work is subcontracted so I basically am the boss's boss. I have only a few of my own employees work under me. Most people working under me are themselves business owners like painting contractors, masonry contractors, electrical contractors, etc. Among other things, I make sure all the material we use is approved, expedite deliveries, make sure everyone gets paid and that the construction is built per the contract documents.

Does it sound fun yet??? Is it little wonder that my greatest satisfaction comes from being a husband and father?

In the area where I live the salary for my position ranges from $40K - $65/year. In major metropolitan areas in the US there are project managers making over $100K/year.
