nishaun Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 This is a scholar question... Does anyone know the correct reading of this verse. 1 Timothy 4:3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. Forbidding to marry, and to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. Forbidding to marry and also forbidding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. Quote
Moderators Nan Posted June 7, 2008 Moderators Posted June 7, 2008 I do not know the answer but I will certainly be interested to read following posts. Quote
Woody Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 I'm 'ready' for the correct reading. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
BibleShockers Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 Forbidding to marry; commanding to abstain from meats with God has created to be received with thanksgiving by them that know the truth that every creature of God is good and nothing is to be rejected... Bill Ross Quote Bill Ross
Moderators John317 Posted August 10, 2008 Moderators Posted August 10, 2008 The original language of 1 Tim. 4:3 literally reads: Robert Young's Literal--- "forbidding to marry -- to abstain from meats that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those believing and acknowledging the truth" It is possible to supply the verb, "saying," "commanding," "enjoining," or "advocating," etc. So the New American Standard Bible gives it correctly: men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
BibleShockers Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 Note that it is a particular truth: ...the truth that [hOTI] every creature of God is good and nothing is to be rejected... Bill Ross Quote Bill Ross
Moderators John317 Posted August 10, 2008 Moderators Posted August 10, 2008 This is a scholar question... Does anyone know the correct reading of this verse. 1 Timothy 4:3 [*]Forbidding to marry and also forbidding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. This translation cannot be right for the simple reason that the words supplied, "and also forbidding," does violence to the meaning of the verse. Both words, "to marry" and "to abstain" are infinitive plural verbs, and therefore, if we go strictly by the rules of grammar, it could be rendered, "forbidding to marry, to abstain from foods...." However, the context (verses 3-5) make it very clear that it doesn't mean "forbidding to abstain" but rather "saying to abstain." The word, "food," is translated from the Greek, broma, and means solid food, not necessarily flesh food. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted August 10, 2008 Moderators Posted August 10, 2008 Good point. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Administrators Gail Posted August 10, 2008 Administrators Posted August 10, 2008 In the God's Word translation, it uses the word "foods", not meats at all. So the sense is that these people would try to stop others from marrying and from eating certain foods. Interesting! Carry on! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators John317 Posted August 10, 2008 Moderators Posted August 10, 2008 Yes, he got that exactly right. It isn't talking about just flesh food but solid foods in general. It is the same word that's used in Romans 14: 15; 1 Cor. 8: 8. It's used to refer to manna in 1 Cor. 10: 3. And Jesus used the same word to refer to doing the will of God, in John 4: 34. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
