Administrators Gail Posted July 13, 2008 Administrators Posted July 13, 2008 Yep, it's true: Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard- Leviticus 19:27 I'll try to remember that! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Parade Orange Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 corners of the head or beard.... what exactly is it saying and why and to whom? Moderators John317 Posted July 14, 2008 Moderators Posted July 14, 2008 God is speaking through his prophet Moses to the entire congregation of Israel. The main theme of Leviticus is holiness. God is holy and therefore His people must be holy. Without holiness there can be no true communion between Him and the people. Verse 19 is referring to heathen practices of that day of shaving off portions of the beard or hair as part of their worship of the false gods. Some scholars believe the worshippers may have offered some of their hair as a sacrifice to the gods. It wouldn't be correct to use the verse as a prohibition against shaving or cutting the hair under modern circumstances. Notice that verse 20 has to do with mutilation and tattoos which are also related to the false religious worship of that time. The whole idea was that Israel was to be separate and distinguished from those false gods. See also Lev. 21: 5,6, which is directed primarily to the priests. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Administrators Gail Posted July 14, 2008 Author Administrators Posted July 14, 2008 Yes, John317 is correct in stating that these words were in direct opposition to the heathen practises of the time. But I thought that the wording was funny! No Mohawk haircuts allowed in Bible times! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Parade Orange Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 O John 317!!!!!!!! Thanku thanku for sharing that.. I hate being confused about things like this. It makes sense now. Context context context. It looks like the Lord is going through the customs of the heathen whereby they honor their gods. Such a custom as rounding your heads would fall in with tattoos and piercings. Administrators Gail Posted July 16, 2008 Author Administrators Posted July 16, 2008 So God isn't saying that the heathen are blockheads. Or maybe He is but we are not to imitate them. Amelia Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 My hair is cropped short to avoid helmet hair, but I'm pleased to hear that this also has many benefits for brain function and moral propensities. This is one reason I never wear hats. The other reason is hats give me headaches. But wouldn't it be nice if all women could wear their hair as short as men without getting odd looks? There are days I get up and wish I could just jump in the shower and go like guys can. Hairstyles of the past were often large and complicated. Lots of fake hair was added along with accessories. Once a style was completed woman or her maid would wrap the head and hair with silk for sleeping and special pillows were created to allow the women to sleep with her head raised so not to disruped the hair. Here is a plate from an 1867 Harper's Bazaar showing the latest hairstyles and fake hair pieces used to create them.
