Woody Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 We've just moved into our newly purchased home. A couple of weeks ago ... my wife hung some hanging baskets on our porch. They have beautiful flowers. Someone else was attracted to the flowers. A Dove came and deposited two eggs. The Question is : Do we just let the flowers die from lack of water ? OR Do we water them anyway? We don't want the Mother so frightened that she would leave her eggs. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators Gerr Posted July 16, 2008 Moderators Posted July 16, 2008 Can't you water the plant without disturbing the nest? This reminds me of the wreath my wife put on our front door years ago and a pair of birds made nest on it. We rarely went through the front door, so we didn't disturb it. Gerry Quote
Woody Posted July 16, 2008 Author Posted July 16, 2008 Hi Gerry. The problem is that the hanging plant is high up near the ceiling of the porch. To shoot the water up there it would have to recherché off the ceiling. OH I don't know how to spell that but you get the idea. Anyway .... it would be rather difficult in my mind. The way we do it now is to take the basket down off the hook which disturbs the Dove. Any ideas that I might be missing? How did the bird in the wreath turn out? Did they have babies? Yesterday we had a bird hit our front window. It was so stunned ... it allowed us to pick it up and take it to a tree. I think eventually it flew off. carolaa Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Now that's a challenge. Watering might scare the parents away, but not watering might kill the plant, exposing the hiding place. Quote
Moderators Gerr Posted July 16, 2008 Moderators Posted July 16, 2008 Get a long small plastic tubing and have someone bury the top end in the potting soil. Secure it so it won't come down. Now you can use a 50 cc syringe to shoot water into it. Gerry P.S. The eggs all hatched and made it through. Quote
jasd Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 >>Someone else was attracted to the flowers.<< Doves on the porch! how nice, yes? Until and unless - you become infested with lice, ...and then the cost of fumigating enters the picture; that is not to mention the g'awful nuisance of spraying pesticide throughout your house; and, the chore - of washing and cleaning everything in and about the house! cheerio! Redwood Chase the doves away. They'll recoup quickly enough and start another nest elsewhere. Quote
Neil D Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 you can also use a watering wand...just use the gentile watering position to water your plant. If the nest gets wet, the doves know what to do....
