Moderators Bravus Posted July 21, 2008 Moderators Posted July 21, 2008 Having a bit of an allergic reaction to the 'heartwarming romp' genre of movies, I'll probably be giving it a miss. But one of the deep, dark secrets of my heavy metal loving heart is that ABBA was the first band of which I was a huge fan, way back when I was about 12. I still know pretty much all the words to all the songs... Quote Truth is important
Parade Orange Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 Bravus we are so going to bond over this! I adored Abba since I was tween in the mid 70's! Bought all their records-sang all the songs! in a world of KISS and fleetwood mac I had to keep my ABBA a secret. I made all my friends sick of ABBA cause I played the records ad naseum. I even wanted to sing backup for them. LOVE EM! As an adult I bought all kinds of salutes to ABBA Garage band tributes world reggae tributes Munich Philharmonic Tribute(great sweeping trumpets and violins) SF Gay Men's Choir tribute(that's so gay) Disco mixes, trance mixes ect. VHS tapes and different collectables. every once in awhile I still break out in an ABBA song- the movie characters did that alot!!!! loved it for that reason! in the Movie 'Murial's Wedding' the slogan was... "Sometimes life is good as an ABBA song" I totally got that. Ellen Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 I just got an ABBA CD for my birthday! I had one in my car when I passed the car on to my son. Forgot about the CD at first and when I looked for it - gone. I asked him to look through his CDs and his friends and they all said they couldn't find it. I have missed it for a few years and when my husband heard me pine for it again he said he would get me one for my birthday (yesterday). Now I'm happy again. Quote

Moderators Kevin H Posted July 22, 2008 Moderators Posted July 22, 2008 ABBA has been one group that successfully touches the heart opening us to joys and getting a victory over the uglyness of heartbreak by having the uglyness turned into a work of beauty, healing, and fun. A little foretast that good is more powerful than evil. Enjoy! (and remenber to keep the members in our prayers.) Quote

cricket Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Saw the movie this evening. Meryl Streep is to die for! Could have done without Pierce Brosnan though. (Who told him he could sing?) The closing credits was a blast! Quote

Moderators Nan Posted July 23, 2008 Moderators Posted July 23, 2008 I think the last movie I watched was Bride and Prejudice (Bollywood sendup of the Jane Austen classic) and Mamma Mia will be next on the list, it has only just been released here....nice to get some positive reviews. Quote

Amelia Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 I think this is one I will attend in the theater. Some things just have to be seen on the big screen. Parade Orange Posted July 25, 2008 Author Posted July 25, 2008 I must say something regarding my own personal demons. God convicted me to throw out all my wordly music tied to my homosexualty. So along time ago I got rid of my ABBA music so I dont listen to them anymore. Well... I have seen them on youtube since and played on the radio as well as in stores. I still love it. It was one of the hardest things to do was to throw them in the trash. My albums,CD's, VHS,collectables, ect. I grew up with an indifferent, yet angry mother and a raging rabid father. When my little sis was born for the first time I saw my mom love something. And I remember believing in my deep core that If only I was a girl my mom would love me too. I identified with girls and not boys. All the music that touched me and my faves growing up would mostly be lady singers. So when Abba came out-then Pat Benatar - then Madonna I would try to sing like them be like them and so on. Abba is an escape for me. And it got to the point in my christian walk that I had to throw them out or be consumed with them. I still need prayer regarding this. Its not easy to sever connections with things that make me escape myself but God wants me to escape to HIM alone! Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted July 25, 2008 Moderators Posted July 25, 2008 Wow. This thread is all news to me. My generation didn't have ABBA. Guess it came along when my kids were growing up. So I'm glad to hear this music; it does seem pleasant, all right. I'll be praying for you, Orange. You're on the right path; just don't let this resurgence of interest in ABBA divert you. [staying away from ABBA is for you like staying away from double chocolate fudge brownies is for me! We just can't break over for even once -- that would just get us off track.] Cheers.... When my little sis was born for the first time I saw my mom love something. And I remember believing in my deep core that If only I was a girl my mom would love me too. I went through a similar experience. My mother wasn't angry and my father was a good Christian man, but I know the other thing you are saying here. It can happen even when parents are wonderful Christians. They can do those things without even being aware of it. Parents often treat their boys less lovingly than they do their girls, and it can be harmful in ways they don't realize. Most boys do fine when this happens, but for whatever reason, some boys do not do so well under those conditions. It can subtly change the way they think of themselves, or bring out things that before were hidden. Quote: I identified with girls and not boys. I'm not sure why but I began to do the same when I was about in the 9th grade. I became aware that I was different from other boys in some fundamental ways, and I knew that my thinking and feelings seemed to be more like the girls'. I didn't know what it was all about or why it was happening. Quote: All the music that touched me and my faves growing up would mostly be lady singers. So when Abba came out-then Pat Benatar -then Madonna I would try to sing like them be like them and so on. Abba is an escape for me. And it got to the point in my christian walk that I had to throw them out or be consumed with them. I still need prayer regarding this. Its not easy to sever connections with things that make me escape myself but God wants me to escape to HIM alone! I felt it was right to throw out a lot of pro-gay books as well as some music, and then later I bought some of those again. After a long period of time, I got rid of them again, and never wanted to get them again. This can be a slow change, Parade. Music has a way of triggering happy memories, but those memories can also bring back feelings and desires that are spiritually harmful to us. It takes healing through lots of prayer, Bible study, and close, strong Christian friendship and support. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
