Neil D Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 In the course of my furnishing my apartment, I am looking to aquire some things. I know that some of you will undoubtedly recommend that the money spent should be spent on for community...IOWs, "give the money to a local charity"....Unfortunately, that doesn't cure the silence very well... Last night, I spent nearly the whole night listening to an audio selection on the computer, and it didn't sound very good. But it was soo nice to hear something besides the sounds of the apartment.... So, I am wondering, what advances is the audio industry making, and what sorts of things do I need to be aware of to a good quality sound from the radio/future sound system/future theater system? I am thinking of a system that I can turn into a theater system.... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
Woody Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 One important thing is to consider the cables that you want to use. I think that Fiber Optics are the best but they are very expensive. Nowadays they have these fancy HDMI cables that will carry both audio and video I think. But they are all expensive and I mean REALLY expensive. Then you have to make sure that the receiver is capable of connecting these new fancy cables. Of course ... what good is your system if you don't have good quality speakers? It goes on and on. Don't forget that if you are watching movies that you will want surround sound. Gotta have a good Woofer. The bottom line is that for good audio ... be prepared to fork out some big bucks. They are pretty easy to take care of too. Liz ... you have the best suggestion yet. But you don't fully understand the consequences. The poor bird would be constantly competing with Neil. Eventually ... the bird would be trying to get NEIL to shut up. I fear for the bird's sleep and physical exhaustion. Where's PETA when you need them. [/quote'] You don't know the half of it, Redwood.... um, i can say that I had a bird once... it was one that i got from a pet shop. I thought it rather unique because it talked up a storm...took to me too, I thought. I paid $500 for that bird...and got it home and the talk changed....went from a friendly thing to a demanding bird...It demanded water, it demanded it's food. It demanded a blanket at night...and when I got tired of it being so demanding, it started swearing...I mean it swore so much, a sailor would have been embarrassed. I tried to reason with it..I tried to tell it to be quiet...Finally, I had had it, one day, and grab the bird and thru it in the freezer....Oh, the noise and swearing that came from that bird....and then it went quiet....real quiet....so quiet, I thought it had died...So, I opened up the freezer and it said, in a perfectly civil voice, "I have seen the error of my ways and am willing to obey and not be so demanding...and I promise not to swear..." "OooKay!" I said... "we can start over if you want." He said "yes, that would be satisfactory, but I want to know one thing...." "What's that?" I asked. As he pointed to the headless frozen chicken, he asked " What did he do ?" Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
Liz Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Yea Red, you are right, in a moment of weakness I almost doomed a poor little bird. Just joshing Neil, sorry, no real help.
