D. Allan Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Millions Who Had Abortions Don't Know It: Ann Woolner Aug. 8 (Bloomberg) -- It's impossible for me to know how many abortions I've had. If asked last week, I would have confidently declared, none. Now, I don't know. It depends on what the meaning of the word ``abortion'' is. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has drafted a rule that would call it abortion when a contraceptive prevents a fertilized egg from embedding itself in the uterine wall. Moderators Nan Posted August 31, 2008 Moderators Posted August 31, 2008 It used to be thought that intrauterine contraceptive devices worked in the way prescribed, by preventing the implantation of the fertilised ovum. However I think more recent research has indicated that at least the copper containing devices (Multiload, Copper T) actually disable the sperm and prevent fertilisation. If that were confirmed they would not be affected by this proposal. Where the hormonal IUCDs stand in this I am not sure (called Mirena here, that may not be the US name). Quote
