cricket Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 I, for one, am appalled at the entire idea of publishing a book or website focused on this topic. I find it every bit as offensive as I do off-color jokes. (Need I go into that again, or are you all tired of hearing it?) Quote

Kountzer Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Cyberspace is ilke the wild, wild west. On message boards, and on blogs people post whatever comes to mind with little forethought and little research. So, i am not that surprised at this. Amelia Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 That book should be titled; "Stuff Some White People Like." Only because there are things on their list that I don't like. #1 for example is coffee. I hate coffee! Oh, do you think that means I'm not white? Or white enough? teehe Quote <p><span style="color:#0000FF;"><span style="font-weight:bold;"><span style="font-style:italic;">"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you."</span></span> Eph 4:29</span><br><br><img src="http://banners.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_both/US/OR/Fairview.gif" alt="Fairview.gif"> Fairview Or</p>

carolaa Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 I don't see how pointing out or even laughing at our differences is a big deal. They are taking some observations and bringing them to light. So what? I've never heard of this book or blog, but it looks like the type of thing I hear as I interact in a multicultural environment on a daily basis. I don't see it as degrading or harmful. If anything, it is making fun of white people. Quote
carolaa Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 LOL - I don't like coffee, either, but you have to admit it's the stereotypical white person who can't start their day w/o it or who sits around Starbucks. Of course, that's the American whites; if you go to Europe, it's not that way. Quote
Liz Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 I read through the list, I don't like the majority of stuff that is there. I wonder what that makes me? Amelia Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 I wonder if they are referring to native dress? Because in China for example, there are possibly hundreds of different native styles. One doesn't just dress as a Chinese because there is no one "look". Unless we speak of the "Mao" look of the cold war era. Quote <p><span style="color:#0000FF;"><span style="font-weight:bold;"><span style="font-style:italic;">"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you."</span></span> Eph 4:29</span><br><br><img src="http://banners.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_both/US/OR/Fairview.gif" alt="Fairview.gif"> Fairview Or</p>
Amelia Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Now one thing I see white Americans do alot is emulate the styles of other cultures. But it's not just in dress. They will do this in decorating their homes too. I have said this in other threads before. White Americans have a bland culture. And when that is set side by side with other more colorful cultures, it can leave something to be desired. Some are just not content to be bland.LOL Quote <p><span style="color:#0000FF;"><span style="font-weight:bold;"><span style="font-style:italic;">"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you."</span></span> Eph 4:29</span><br><br><img src="http://banners.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_both/US/OR/Fairview.gif" alt="Fairview.gif"> Fairview Or</p>
D. Allan Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 We can't let those wrappers tell what to wear! Next thing they'll be making us ride at the back of the bus. Guess what the fall fashions may bring for women: Quote: It's time to kiss Irwin Shaw's girls in their summer dresses goodbye. Skin is out of fashion. Long sleeve white shirts buttoned so high and tight that they may cause strangulation are in. So are skirts that barely show half a calf and pants with bottoms wide enough for a child to hide in. The look being pushed is Amish with a glamorous twist. Let's call it Glamish. What sounds like an oxymoron has been declared not so by influential designers. Ad campaigns from Prada to Furla to Banana Republic show women in clothes that scream: "Banish the BMW, give me a horse and buggy." -http://www.huffingtonpost.com/karin-tanabe/glamish-why-does-fall-fas_b_122528.html and a whip? /dAb Quote dAb O frabjous day! Moderators Bravus Posted September 2, 2008 Moderators Posted September 2, 2008 I think the site is essentially satirising the idea of stereotypes itself. Maybe that's too meta to be fun for some... or maybe it's just not funny for some. I find it funny. Quote Truth is important
