Polls showing McCain and Obama Tied

Yes. You may have heard something to the contrary but yes. They are tied. Even before the traditional bump of the convention ... they are tied.

Yes, the polls actually show Obama with a 6-8 point lead. But, throughout this election process ... people have been shown to lie. Yes, LIE. It has been shown that 6-8% of those polled say they are going to vote for Obama because they figure it is the PC thing to do... but do not.

During the primaries the talking heads were marveling at the accuracy and consistancy of this.

So, if McCain gets any kind of bump from the convention ... he will be ahead.

It looked like the whole thing was rigged to install McCain. Like Pres Bush Jr. ran against a few weirdos who would never qualify for the office. That looked rigged. He didn't have anyone to run against.

Now McCain runs against a woman, (never been a woman president, probably never will), a crazy old man, and a black man, (there has also never been a black president).

And McCain is a complete goof. He keeps saying one thing to one group and a completely different and contradicting thing to another group.

But he's the shoo-in, cause he's some powerful group's puppet.

But if it's true that the election is tied, that's a miracle. Unless whoever if fixing it wants to make it look like it's not being fixed and give America the illusion that the people really have a vote.

It would be a miracle of Obama won. Maybe it's time to try black just one time? First black president? Give everyone hope. Sound great! I hope it works.

I don't think it's "rigged." I believe in our electoral system and in our constitution.

You don't believe Al Gore was qualified to be president? John Kerry came fairly close to winning. I don't believe Kerry was any more weird than McGovern or Jimmy Carter. Kerry was about as qualified to be president as John Kennedy. I'm glad he didn't win, but he was qualified if Kennedy was.

You have to be talking about Hillary Clinton, but that is past tense. He was running against Hillary for a while because she chose to run and was getting a lot of votes in the primaries.

There's never been a woman president, true, but that doesn't mean there never will be one. I believe there will be one, eventually. It's just a matter of time. If McCain wins, we will have our first woman vice-president, and that is only a heart-beat away from being president.

I think Hillary proved that Americans are willing to vote for a woman to be president. She got more votes in the primaries than most men have ever gotten.

I don't think he's crazy at all. I don't agree with him, though. He takes the Libertarian view on a lot of issues.

I think America is willing to vote for a black man as president. But I don't think people should vote for someone just because he's black or white or any other race. But I am glad to see that Americans are generally willing to vote for a black person.

I don't think he's a shoo-in at all, but I believe he is likely to win because the Democrats selected the most liberal politician in the US Senate. He's more liberal than McGovern, Ted Kennedy, or Al Gore. Many Americans are not yet aware of this.

I don't believe anyone is "fixing it." Do you believe all the elections have been "fixed"? When did elections begin to be fixed?

I know that Kennedy's election was paid for by his father, but that was a very close election. His father paid people in Chicago to vote for his son. If Kennedy had lost Illinois, Nixon would have won the presidency. Nixon knew this but did nothing about it. But it wasn't because Kennedy was "some powerful group's puppet."

Obama could win and will win if the American people want him. But I don't believe it is best for the United States to vote for him just because of the color of his skin. His skin color shouldn't have anything to do with it, any more than the skin color of McCain ought to be the reason for voting for him. It should be based on the issues, preparedness, character, and experience.

If Obama wins, I'll support him. He'd be my president.

I don't think McCain will be shown to be ahead until the last few days before the election.

I believe that most of the polls being published now are all about moving the voters to vote for Obama. Virtually all of polls are done by organizations which favor Obama, and they want to be seen as having been right in the election. Therefore they will probably not tell the real truth about the polls until just before the election, maybe two or three days. Those last polls will tell the truth. I suspect all of these others are primarily for the sake of influencing the voters.

Just sharing a little experience from Australia. Our election was about a year before yours.

For months before the election the polls showed the Labor Party and Kevin Rudd in the lead, and for months conservatives in the newspapers were saying that the polls were biased, that no-one had polled *them*, that more conservatives than liberals would have simply hung up when called by pollsters, and a wide variety of other things designed to suggest that the polls were inaccurate.

The election showed that the polls had been pretty much dead on.

Nixon was Eisenhower's running mate.

Polls are very accurate. In modern polling, the only times they have been way off is when a black man is on the ticket. People tend to tell pollsters they will vote for the black candidate but don't. Polls indicated a clear victory for Mayor Dinkins when Guiliana beat him.

The best Republican ticket since Eisenhower/Whoever.

The Eisenhower/Nixon ticket was a good one, and except for Nixon's big stumble over Watergate, he would have been known as a better than average President. He was certainly qualified, having served 8 years as Vice-President and a few weeks as President while Eisenhower was recuperating from heart-attack. Presidential historians also believe that he was the brightest of all the modern presidents. Unfortunately, Nixon had personality problems-- he was paranoid and obsessed over "enemies."

Remember George McGovern? Remember his original running mate, Senator Eagleton? McGovern had to choose another running mate after it was discovered that his original choice was mentally unbalanced. I thought McGovern was good at the time-- I was very antiwar-- but the rest of the nation did not agree with me. George did not even win his own home state. Nixon won by the biggest landslide victory in modern history, only to have to resign two years later because of a stupid mistake.

I voted for three Democratic tickets that lost, and one that made it: Jimmy Carter. He was the worst in modern history.

On the 1972 election, wikipedia says,

In the general election, the McGovern/Shriver ticket suffered a 61%-37% defeat to Nixon — at the time, the second biggest landslide in American history, with Electoral College totals of 520 to 17. McGovern's two electoral vote victories came in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.; McGovern failed to win his home state of South Dakota, a state that had delivered for the Democrats in only three of the previous 18 presidential elections in the twentieth century.

If you go back in history, and look at Nixon as the nation saw him at the time, he was a very good president and candidate. His only real problem was Watergate. That was a big mistake, sure, but you have to consider the whole man and the whole administration and what it accomplished. If you read the histories and biographies, you find that Nixon was our most complex president but also one of the best since World War 2. (I realize that this is impossible to imagine when only Watergate is considered.)

Don't forget that he won re-election by the biggest margin of victory in 1972, so the nation as a whole liked the job he had done up to that time.

If he had come out in the open with his terrible error and asked the nation to forgive him, he almost certainly would not have been forced to resign.

You could probably see Julie at the Nixon library as she appears there often. The girls don't speak to each other any more, nor do their husbands talk to each other. It has to do with the way the Nixon library is run. Tricia Nixon Cox lives a very private life and NY as the wife of an attorney, and she serves on a number of boards. Julie has written books, one a biography of her mom, and is active in community work. Recently Julie made a large contribution to the Obama campaign.
