Fresh from a 4000-person super rally in Denver, the Nader/Gonzalez Campaign team has hit the ground in Minneapolis and will be out in full force over the weekend to focus attention on the need for opening up the Presidential Debates for third party and independent candidates, working towards the crescendo: a star-studded open the debates super-rally on Thursday.

Ralph Nader, Matt Gonzalez, Jesse Ventura, Cindy Sheehan, Rosa Clemente, 98 Degrees band members Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons, singer-songwriters Nellie McKay, David Rovics, Tom Neilson and other surprise guests soon to be announced will all appear at the Nader/Gonzalez "Open the Debates" Super Rally September 4 at 7.30 p.m. at the Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.

The Nader/Gonzalez independent presidential candidacy will be on the ballot in 45 states, is polling at 5-6 per cent nationally, and a new Time/CNN poll shows Ralph Nader polling 8 percent in New Mexico, 7 percent in Colorado, 7 percent in Pennsylvania, and 6 percent in Nevada -- all key battleground states. What in the world is Rosa Clemente doing at Ralph Nader's rally?

Good question, carolaa! Beats me. But didn't R.Nader run on the Green ticket in years past? I think I read somewhere that he switched to 'independent' because it is easier to get on more state ballots than if he were running as a 3rd party candidate. McCain's people are trying to get him thrown off the Penn. ballot. /dAb

On 2nd thought, Rosa Clemente is probably very interested in opening up the debates for "third party and independent candidates," which is what the rally is all about.

Of course Ron Nadar is far more likely to take votes away from Obama than from McCain, just as he took votes away from Gore and very few from Bush. Nadar will advertise himself as the REAL anti-war and anti-drill candidate, because Obama has changed somewhat on both of those issues from his original stances on them.

Every body has to earn their own votes, is that way I see it. Of course if the republicans would not put up a candidate this year, than McCain wouldn't be taking votes away from Obama! We could just have a yes or no vote for Obama.

Perhaps third party candidates would have a fairer chance if the vote required a 2/3 majority to elect the president. At least people might feel more free to vote for a third party candidate on the first run. ? /dAb (psst: just an idea)

Liberate Presidential Debates, Denver, 8/24/08

The Liberty Bell was near the Colorado State Capital Building and was a call for the debates to be opened up to Ralph Nadar and his Vice-Presidential running mate. I'm all for it. Looks like it could use some liberty all right.

Didn't they go hog-wild on the number of police? /dAb

Yes, they did, but that's because the city was prepared for over 10,000 protesters, and only a fraction of that actually turned out. The photo was taken the first day of the convention and before the city realized the actual number of demonstrators. Denver had called in extra police from surrounding cities. They were ready!
