There is clearly too much personal biting here.

I have said several times, people that are weak on a position turn to personal attacks.

Stop it.

AND no nicknames unless it is approved by the person who it is directed at.

If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses.

Could we have a few examples so we can know what you are talking about?

We once had a member here with the user name "Iron Deacon". Someone that disagreed with him a lot nicknamed him "Rusty". Iron Deacon probably didn't appreciate that too much.

When I use to compete in debate I was taught that when my opponent turns to personal insults that is when I know I have won the debate.

Yes. But, I've been called lots of names. And when they come from those who agree with me ... I laugh. But when they come from those who disagree with me ... I don't take it so well. Interesting.

The same goes as far as those who I call nic names I think. I might shorten a name of someone. And if they know I like or support them ... they usually don't mind. But if I disagree with them frequently or an considered a friend ... it is over looked as just friendly banter.

I would hope that we don't have to drop ALL nic names. I think it is fun. But, it does depend upon the spirit behind the nic name. And I think that is usually easily seen.

Why not just say "biting" is in the eye of the beholder?

Lacking any actual definition, no one can be held to account, and everyone can be confident it is someone else.

Not entirely. We're anonymous to one another on streets and highways, yet, more often than not, there is order rather than chaos. When there are not actual rules, or little effective enforcement, you get traffic like, say, Mexico City.

The same type of thing goes on in church board and business meetings all the time. It doesn't matter what is actually said, only who says it. Sound familiar?

No, with actual definitions, there would be a potential for accountability. But even then, they have to be enforced--sometimes against our buddies.

Otherwise we're either ruled by the law of the jungle, or the influence of clans. Or a little of both.
