We were planning to drive up to the Fort Worth, Arlington area before the storm turned this way. had to work today, or else we would of jumped on the highway this morning. We just came back from the supermarket to get some bread. The bread isle is almost empty. We got bread at home, but wanted something else.

All the gas stations are packed with cars. People are not as polite as usual. We're gonna ride it out. We live on the North side of the city, which is away from the gulf and all the water.

Right now it is nice - the calm before the storm. This time tomorrow, who knows? Ike is suppose to hit late friday night, or early Saturday morning. Should be interesting.

Ask Jerry (Thomas)...

How is it going, Jerry, with you guys?

Thanks. They say Houston hasn't seen a hurricane like this in 25 years. We've boarded & hoarded to the best of our ability. Expecting sustained winds of 80-100 all day Sat. in our neighborhood.

Oh, please pray for the stranded tanker the Gulf. It broke down 90-some miles from Galveston, right in Ike's path. 22 on board probably won't survive. Helicopter rescue wasn't successful due to high winds.

Oh No, how awful. We will pray for them, as well as the rest that are in its path.

How wierd is this? I'm frantically trying to get next week's home school assignments printed out before we lose electricity. Our house could blow away in a tornado and the assignments would be scattered across 8 counties. Good grief.

I think I'm just at the point of nervously waiting now, trying to do something to take my mind off it.

LOL, that is probably what *I* would be doing too. Big hugs and prayers.

25 years ago, a few months after I moved back to Texas & the Houston area from Marin California, hurricane Alicia hit. My uncle and I rode out the storm in a little house that he and my granddad built 50 years ago, or so. That house was rocking and reeling, but the wind didn't blow it down. It didn't flood the area all that much either. Every storm and storm situation is different, of course.

I didn't have a regular job then and after the storm I worked as a day loborer cleaning up debris at various locations in the region. Seems like yesterday almost.

One week after the storm & we still have no electricity. At first the whole area was dark after sunset. Now there are streetlights on the main Rd to the North, and to the South. The area in between, where we live is still a big dark zone, lol. Lots of humming generators. The weather was bearable last week when a cool front brought low temps and low humidity. Now the temp is rising, and the humidity as well. Oh well.

It could be worse. Only a small section of the back fence blew down. I mostly have it back in place, so the dog won't get out. A friend who lives further North had a leak in his roof the night of the storm. He got up and tried to patch it, and almost fell thru. He hurt his ankle. We went over and helped last Sunday. Their house is a mess.

I worked Friday for the first time this week. I also worked some as a volunteer at one of the distribution centers. It should be crazy at work Monday. I saw a lot of linemen out working on the electrical grids this morning. Maybe we will have power soon.

Anybody have a generator? (half kidding, half not kidding).

I'm glad that you and your family are OK. Sorry to hear that you still don't have power. I thought that according to the news that Houston still had power, or did they mean the downtown area or is that wrong.

Parts of Houston has power. I am downtown now. Everything seems okay here. My subdivision is older, and has a lot of trees and stuff. Fallen trees are harder for the electric line crews to clear.

That was what I was thinking. I had also heard that most of the lines are underground in Houston. Is that true?

No, I don't think that is true. They have underground lines in the medical center area, and probably downtown. Most residential areas have conventional above ground lines, running atop electric poles.

Line crews are like rock stars around here these days. If you see them you want to run and shout and go up and hug 'em, lol.

That's what I meant to say. I know that in Europe or at least in Germany that the lines are underground. I saw a thing on that. About the pro and cons of having the wires underground. It seemed to me that having them underground had its advantages over the wires up on poles. Well anyway glad to hear things are getting back to normal. I guess normal is relative!

Hang in there DB. If I had a generator I would loan it to you. Although they use a lot of gas if one keeps them running. Those linemen are our heroes. No doubt about that.
