Moderators John317 Posted September 12, 2008 Moderators Posted September 12, 2008 I really hope you don't decide to stop talking about these things, Bravus. We may not agree on some issues, such as Iraq, and Left vs. Right, etc., but I like hearing your viewpoints. How much time have you spent in the US? Tell a little about that if you don't mind. Dr. Shane Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Welcome to the club. I gave up trying to convince other people a long time ago. It makes life a lot easier. I follow politics like some people follow reality TV shows or sporting competitions. I share my thoughts, as everyone here knows well, but when I share my thoughts I am simply trying to communicate to others what I think. I am not trying to convince others to think like me. God forbid! I am just a sinner and certainly subject to being mistaken, misguided and not seeing the whole picture. I am not so vain to believe what I think has to be right. It is my opinion and nothing more than that. And my opinion is of no more value than that of any other sinner. I am not receiving visions or dreams from God so I don't have any inside information that others don't. A couple of cliches can be very liberating. So I'll stop trying to talk people down off the ledge, and just sit it out like any other natural disaster. I really wish you wouldn't do that.....You have articulated some things far better than what I could express and done it well. You have a far bettter grasp on American politics than you may have realized ... Of course you realize that our point of view is one that is going down the tubes and the ultra conservative point of view will be the new centralist issues...of course, it has been that ways for these last 7 years. I really wish that people really understood that the laws of the land are for everyone...and that together, all of us benefit if we work together...But for one to say one thing and then do another....well, it reminds me of the game in college that we were playing [of course, it has an object lesson to it.] The goal is to aquire as many points as possible. if everyone agreed to work together, the point value to each person was 2 point....however if one person were to NOT work with everyone, then everyone got a -1 and the one person who did NOT work with everyone, got 9 points. [There were 10 people playing]. Of course, if everyone didnt work together, everyone lost -2 points. The game showed just how everyone lost out when everyone didn't work together and how everyone gained by being greedy....There were a lot of people who let thier feelings be known during the game....It revealed a lot of really greedy people....and some really socialist type people... Tell a little about that if you don't mind. When and where and for how long? Well, don't you remember??!! Bravus lived and taught in the university here in the U.S. He hasn't been in Australia very long at all!! But to say he knows what he is talkin about ... might be a stretch. At least comin from a Republican point of view. To you Demos he might know what he's talkin about. But you can have it .... Just in fun Bravus. You is good. I just don't agree with ya. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

When I first started reading C/A Bravus was an expat here in the Midwest U.S.A. -- for many years! He's no slouch. He knows whereof he speaks! Just remember there are no absolutes in political philosophy. There is good evidence and valid reasoning, but the conclusions people come to-- on both sides of the spectrum-- are often due to some of the evidence not being taken into account or else understood differently. Bravus is a socialist in the reformist school of that particular philosophy. That is a legitimate viewpoint, but most Americans-- even most Democrats-- do not share it. This is shown by the fact that the United States has never elected a socialist candidate for President, and in fact, such a candidate has never gotten more than a fraction of the vote. Also it is shown by the fact that Americans have generally voted for conservative candidates since WW2. We've only had one socialist Senator, and Obama campaigned for him only a couple of years ago. Obama was the first candidate on a major ticket who has campaigned for a socialist. It seems obvious to me that he did so because they have a lot in common.
