Gas dips below $1 in Ontario

October 17, 2008 CCBC News

Drivers in parts of Ontario are filling up their gas tanks for the lowest prices since February as the cost of fuel dipped below $1 on Friday.

Motorists in the Greater Toronto Area saw a five-cent-per-litre drop overnight, with a litre selling for about 99 cents.

Liberal MP and gas industry watchdog Dan McTeague says regular gasoline in the Toronto area should be selling for about 92 cents per litre. He predicts it will continue to drop "to the low 90s by next week."

Gas prices have also dropped across country.

In Calgary and Edmonton, it's hovering around $1 per litre Friday morning, according to the gas price monitoring website gasbuddy.com.

Moving to the East, people in Halifax saw a drop of 2.2 cents to $1.08 per litre, while in St. John's, it's roughly $1.15.

Costs in New Brunswick dipped to $1.05 a litre of regular, while on Prince Edward Island, a litre goes for slightly more than $1 per litre.

The four Atlantic provinces have their gas prices regulated by the provincial bodies in an effort to achieve price stability.

And where is "here"?

Boy are you ever so blessed. Here in Australia we are still paying over $1.36 per litre (or roughly converted to gallons) $A5.40 per gallon (or $US3.26 per gallon). Just think of us in Australia when you think your are paying a high price still!

Gas prices may be coming down but food prices are still going up.

That's 3.74 CAD per Gallon or 4.41 USD per gallon. Not really a good bargain. Its .64 CAD per liter (Adjusted) in Detroit.

The lowest I have seen it was $2.18/gallon here.

Food prices will drop too if gas stays down for long enough - like a year. Oil prices have driven the cost of energy up higher. Thus it has cost more to produce the food we are eating. Given time, it will fall.

I can't see how low gas prices will not act as a stimulus to the sagging economy. If gas prices stay down they may kick start the economy just in time for the next US President to take credit for it.
