Definitely worth reading and considering, whether one is for Obama or against. It is a great piece of analysis of Rhetoric, the art of persuasion.

Oh good grief...The things that people dream up to show that there is some sort of deception going on when they can not explain why their candidate is not winning the battle...

I know a Psychiatrist that believes that there may very well be something to this. He is not a crackpot, but has studied at a very fine Adventist University.

Now, come on! According to this, all of the politicians using hypnotic techniques. You know why? The key to hypnosis and mind control.

1) Repetition

2) Bypassing logic by means of emotion

3) Making use of panic and confusion to gain suggestibility state

4) Voice Roll to induce shock and then suggestibility state

All successful public speakers know these techniques. You will see most of the preachers use these in churches. In face, you will find church often resorting to hypnotic techniques unknowingly.

For example. Consider a simple altar call. The music will be playing in the background. Preacher will ask everyone to close their eyes, and then continually make mental suggestions. Guess what, that's a hypnotic technique. Yet nobody cries about it in churches. Any persuasive technique that bypasses logic and caters to subconscious is a hypnotic technique.

I agree. Actually there were those in the SDA church that for a long time said that the seminary at AU taught how to use hypnosis and mind controll etc. Wow pretty soon, if we just urge someone to accept Christ we will be accused of using "mind controll" or something. I think there are many other much more pressing matters to attend to.

I have never liked most alter calls.

Some of those techniques can be used without it being mindless.

Repetition for instance. When I read something that really makes sense to me, and I want to remember it, I might use repetition to remember it.

I think the key is to make sure what you are saying (or for the hearer-hearing) makes sense. Don't just give simple, vague words or phrases for people to repeat: such as "hope", "believe", "change", "O-ba-ma".

After hearing a speech or sermon, I think about what I learned. If I can only say single words or simple phrases, I may not have learned much. Sometimes, though, I can't remember what I learned. That may be because I didn't learn anything, or because there were no mindless phrases to easily remember.

I do like catchy phrases--if they really mean something. (Note the line at the bottom of my post. I got that from a sermon about 15 years ago. Obviously, it made an impact on me, that I use it this many years later.)

Agreed that some alter calls are too long or are meant to play on the emotions too much. But I have seen fabulously done alter calls where the spirit of God was definately present and people made decisions to follow Christ.

It is great that youwant to think about what you have learned. If everyone did that type of "pondering" there would be many more people who would see the beauty in God's word, the consistency and his deep love for each human being on this planet.

Actually, if you consider the work of the many "revivalist" preachers of the past that scare people with hell and torment by yelling and screaming from the top of their lungs, and then make a call... it was very effective.

I'm glad that not many SDA churches are doing that today... although I still think that people need to make logical decisions before they count all cost.

As far as polititian using phrases. Obama is not the only one to blame:

To the Republicans who can not believe that their candidate doesn't have the good ideas to lead this country into a better world-

Why?

Why is it that your candidate is not winning the hearts and minds of your fellow countrymen? Perhaps there is a reason why your candidate is not winning the hearts and minds of your fellow countrymen...perhaps your countrymen have figured something out and seen something that you have overlooked. Perhaps your values are overemphasised in your own mind. Perhaps you overlooked a valued trait that they see. Perhaps you are evaluating the current crisis with the strength of character of the candidate incorrectly....

Then again, perhaps you are correct, and you and a few others are truly correct, and the world is being hypnotized into believing that the wrong candidate is the best one. After all, the end of the world scenerios all show that most of the world will side with evil...and only a few will side with the righteous....
