GreatLakesGramma Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 I am allergic to wheat, so I don't eat any of those kinds of bread. I eat millet & flax seed bread, which is actually made with more rice flour than millet. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. doctorj Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Coming from down-under of course I like Marmite Sandwiches, or Vegemite, but Vegemite does not have quite the flavour of Marmite. aldona Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Am i the only meat eater?? No- but we were only allowed to have 3 choices. If there was a fourth choice I would have put meat. I am mostly vegetarian at home but when I go out, I sometimes have meat in a sandwich. Other favourites... - Marmite and cream cheese - "The AAA" = Avocado, Asparagus and Alfalfa Sprouts, preferably on rye or sourdough, with dressing - Tahini (sesame seed paste) and honey (mmm...delicious) - and just about any sandwich can be improved by adding either a couple of slices of beetroot (sorry, another Australian quirk) or some pesto. aldona Quote www.asrc.org.au (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Melbourne)Helping over 2000 refugees & asylum seekers each monthIMSLP/Petrucci Music LibraryThe Public Domain Music Score Library - Free Sheet Music DownloadsLooking for classical sheet music? Not all we like but it improves the flavour of most things - lettuce, cucumber, avocado are obvious. Not so obvious, peanut butter and banana, all together. (My father tried all sorts of things on icecream, including Marmite, but I do not recall his repeating it often.) Quote

BobRyan Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 I thought it was a catholic custom about Fridays being considered a day of fasting - then downsized to a day for avoiding meat as the new "fast" and finally - removing fish from the category of "meat" and yet still considering that a valid "fast" from meat on Fridays. Dr. Shane Posted October 26, 2008 Author Posted October 26, 2008 In the July 2008 issue of Adventist World there was an article abut fish that pretty much separated it from other meats. In that article it says "Fish was eaten by Ellen White instead of 'flesh meat.' and she considered it better food than flesh of animals. She cautioned about fish from polluted rivers... This [university of Toronto] study showed that in fat biopsies taken from vegetarians, the content of DHA was very adequate... This means we do not see a need at this time to recommend fish be added to the vegetarian's diet... The Biblical record of Jesus eating and serving fish in His glorified state surely allays any questions as to the morality of eating fish. Ellen White's preference for fish over flesh meat also suggests that any problem with fish relates to its contamination. For those with ample choice and quantities of foods available to them, particularly nuts and seeds, we see no reason for them to included fish in their diet. Conversely, we know of no health hazard for eating of unpolluted fish." Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

Did I miss something? in Christ, Bob I thought the Catholic custom of eating fish on Fridays originated about the fifteenth century when the fisherman of Genoa were doing it tough and needed a way to increase consumption.....and having a fish only day worked quite well. I have not researched this, it might be only an urban myth, but it is something I heard very many years ago - and not from an antiCatholic source. Quote
carolaa Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 I thought it originated with Lent, because people gave up meat on Fridays but they could eat fish because fish isn't considered meat. Quote
Amelia Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 From what Ive been able to gather, Catholics were not forced to eat fish on Fridays, just not eat meat. From Jimmy Akin: Catholic answer man Quote: Church law is written in Latin. In Latin the thing we are forbidden to eat on (today certain) Fridays is carnis. In Latin, carnis means the flesh of warm-blooded, land-dwelling animals. Since people couldn't eat carnis, they looked for things similar to carnis to eat on Fridays. Tofu burgers not having been introduced in the West, people started eating fish. The practice of eating fish became widespread. But then I found this on the same site Quote: The fish sandwich found at most fast food places is due to lent. When McDonalds owner Ray Kroc saw his friday hamburger sales dropping during lent, he discovered it was due to Catholics abstention from meat. He made a fish sandwich to grab that market, and many others later followed suit. The pretzel exists because some German monks, who would follow a very strict lenten diet, made up some little wheat snacks (no yeast allowed). The crossing of the "arms" in the middle of the pretzel signifies the old style of praying by crossing your arms on your chest. The latin word for "arms", bracellae, morphed into the german and became "pretzel". The pre-Lenten celebration of Carnivale is due to everyone having to eat their meats and dairy products because they would otherwise spoil before Easter. "Carne" is Latin for meat, "Vale" is Latin for goodbye Quote <p><span style="color:#0000FF;"><span style="font-weight:bold;"><span style="font-style:italic;">"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you."</span></span> Eph 4:29</span><br><br><img src="http://banners.wunderground.com/weathersticker/gizmotimetemp_both/US/OR/Fairview.gif" alt="Fairview.gif"> Fairview Or</p>

BobRyan Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Catholic canon law requires fasting on every Friday -- but Eventually the fasting on Fridays turned into meatless-fast -- and then to "well ok - fish is not meat" for the purpose of fasting. This is what the Code of Canon Law of 1983 says about the matter: Quote: Canon 1251. Abstinence from meat, or another food according to the prescriptions of the Conference of Bishops, is to be observed on all Fridays throughout the year unless they are solemnities; abstinence and fast are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and the Friday of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Moderators John317 Posted October 28, 2008 Moderators Posted October 28, 2008 Eventually the fasting on Fridays turned into meatless-fast -- and then to "well ok - fish is not meat" for the purpose of fasting. Helps to explain why, when I tell people I don't eat meat, I hear quite a few people respond with, "OK but you eat fish, then, right?" And I say, "Fish is meat." And then they get this puzzled expression on their faces. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
