Stan Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Came across this situation a few days ago.. Lad came across with his mother, from Mexico when he was 18 months. Not documented. Went through SDA School system, graduating from College, BA level. Still remains. 'illegal' Gets paid under the table, a lower take home rate than others. Treated like a third class citizen Has to cash pay checks at a local store for a 10% charge. All of his family lives in Washington State as well. The US has been the only home he knows. Is wanting to get engaged. Woody Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Sounds 'political' to me. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Stan Posted October 27, 2008 Author Posted October 27, 2008 That is a cop out of an answer for a real question. Quote If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses. https://www.paypal.me/clubadventist Administrator of a few websites like https://adventistdating.com
Woody Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 I try to stay clear of politics. I just get full of mud when I try. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

He might find some work where he could get paid more and be able to cash checks without a surcharge. And they would let him get engaged. Besides ... with his American education he could help his fellow countrymen. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

So if he came to you, you would say, "not going to help you I stay out of politics?" Thanks, this is a better answer I doubt if the girl that he is talking about getting engaged to would move there. Some life situations are just sucky.... Woody Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Yes. You are right. There is not always a good answer. But I just don't believe that the US can be the Saviour for all peoples of the earth. Somewhere you have to draw the line. Will some people get hurt in the process? Yes. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Is wanting to get engaged. There are always consequences when something is done illegally. And he is suffering the consequences. But that's beside the point. The question now is, what can he do? Here are his options as I see it. 1) Hire/consult an immigration lawyer. The lawyer probably knows some aspects of the law that might be considered mitigating circumstances. No doubt there are thousands like him whose parents brought young children into the USA illegally and know no other country. 2) Marry a citizen. Even if he is sent back to his country of origin, the gov't can't keep him out forever if married to a US citizen. 3) Join the Armed Services. That's one avenue to becoming a citizen. 4) Apply for citizenship. 5) Pray that an amnesty bill will be enacted by Congress after the coming election. Gerry Quote

He should be able to find some way to gain legal access. I would guess that in addition to him not understanding the Mexican culture because he is truely American he probably doesn't speak Spanish fluently. Furthermore his girlfriend/fiancee is in the USA. What a mess. My sympathies are with him. Quote
fccool Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 What was the world like a mere 100 years ago? What are we turning into? If you are walking across the desert and you see a child laying there dying from thirst... would you help her? Or would you say... I can't save everyone. Someone would have to suffer. It's a terrible and selfish attitude to take on. We are enjoying prosperity today mainly because of the artificial system that is imposed on the world. There is no other reason why labor in one country would be valued more. Nobody chooses to be born in a poor nation. So, to act with such arrogance towards HUMAN BEINGS, especially if one claiming to be Christian - the follower of Christ - does not sit well with me. Consider what would Christ do in this situation. The laws of the land are not superior to the laws of God, and are not above human decency. For all who are screaming "illegal", what do you think Columbus and the subsequent colonists did? Did they ask natives for permission to stay? Did they integrate and learned the language? I think we need to rethink our definition of "legality" and "fairness". Quote
Taylor Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 I agree that we need to rethink our definition of legality and fairness. It is a fine line to walk between "enforcing the law" and having "compassion" and "understanding". People need to be viewed with their individual situations, not as a general group, but that is hard for lawmakers to do, and still make laws. However, yes, we need to re-look at the imigration issues. There are innocent people that could be helped without opening the floodgates to whomever and whoever. Quote

Sometimes the trip down can be heart rending. "Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife." Gen 16:2,3 KJV We're all paying heavily for that one to this day. Blessings! Quote Lift Jesus up!!

LifeHiscost Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I think we need to rethink our definition of "legality" and "fairness". And your estimation of God's manner of dealing with Hagar and Ishmael, in the light of Sarah's heartlessness, would be what? Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Joe_in_RP Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Stan I understand your compassion. There is a reason for rules. What about fairness? Why doe one area (Mexico and South America) allowed to have so many immigrants when other countries like Philippines is so limited? Why do the rules for one country not apply to all? I know many wonderful people who will never have a chance to come to USA because of the illegal immigration that has poisoned the issue. If he goes back to Mexico, she can visit him there and then come home and apply for a Fiance Visa just like the rest of us would have to do. Quote
