Woody Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Is it okay to galavant or is that sexist and a sin? What is your view of galavanting? Okay .... even you gals can join in. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators Bravus Posted November 10, 2008 Moderators Posted November 10, 2008 If we go to the roots of the word, we get 'gal' - a young woman, and 'avant' - advance. So, since this activity is clearly about advancing young women, it is obviously the height of feminist virtue. (*cough*the real spelling is 'gallivanting'*cough*) Quote Truth is important
Amelia Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary gallivanting Main Entry: gal·li·vant Variant(s): also gal·a·vant \ˈga-lə-ˌvant\ Function: intransitive verb Etymology: perhaps alteration of 3gallant Date: 1823 1 : to go about usually ostentatiously or indiscreetly with members of the opposite sex 2 : to travel, roam, or move about for pleasure Wiktionary gallivant to gallivant (third-person singular simple present gallivants, present participle gallivanting, simple past and past participle gallivanted) (intransitive, obsolete) To flirt, to romance. (*cough*the real spelling is 'gallivanting'*cough*) I assume that you are referring to the way they spell down under ??? Let it be known that that is not the REAL spelling. The way we in the States do our galavanting ... it is spelled GALAVANTING. Please take note. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Thank you for that bit of wisdom ... but could you address the questions as they be for this thread? What do you think as a woman about this activity? Is it Okay? Or ... Is it a sin to partake in this activity? Please tell us your view and experience with this word and activity. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Amelia Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 I provided the defs for those who might not know the word. I have always thought of gallivanting as a negitive term. So in that sense no, I don't aprove of gallivanting. But Im not sure if the activity itself is a sin. But the outcome of the activity can be a sin. Moderators Bravus Posted November 10, 2008 Moderators Posted November 10, 2008 Well, I'm happy with the current definition (as long as it's not my students doing it during class time), but the archaic definition is strictly to be between man and wife... Quote Truth is important
Woody Posted November 10, 2008 Author Posted November 10, 2008 Praise God we are not archaic. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

But like many words ... it has multiple meanings. Some are more severe than others. And I do appreciate that you posted the meaning. Did not mean to say otherwise. Neil D Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Is it okay to galavant or is that sexist and a sin? What is your view of galavanting? Well, I have always used the term to roam about....period. end of discussion.... But now someone says that glavanting is roaming about with the opposite sex.... Being single, I say.... ......bring it on!!!! Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
Moderators LynnDel Posted November 10, 2008 Moderators Posted November 10, 2008 My own internal definition has always been similar to Neil's (first paragraph only). Gallivanting, in my mind, is always done "about town," most likely having something to do with window shopping and money burning holes in one's pockets. But as far as Redwood's question: "Is it okay to galavant or is that sexist and a sin?" -- (taking it as a serious question, though I have my doubts that is the casw) The answer must lie in your own heart. What is right for you may not be right for me. Sometimes, when looking at the life of Jesus, one might think that a lot of what He did, on the surface, was to gallivant (Neil's first definition) about the Judean towns and countryside. What may look purposeless to us, however, was full of purpose. Let Jesus be your example; live a purposeful life. LD Quote LD

Liz Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 I agree with LynnDel's post about gallivanting. And I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as you have the money to gallivant with.
