Why should we bail out Detroit?

They want $10 billion. It seems far too much for me.

Is there any way to stop all of these requests from those who spend more than they have?

I am going to put my foot down on this. I see no reason and no benefit from giving them $10 billion.

Just move away and get a job somewhere else.

Or live with in your means. That is what I have to say to them.

You are asking the question like we have any choice in the matter.

I think we do. We have to put a stop to this or every city in America will overspend.

How are you proposing to do that? Write mail to already elected officials who already hardly listen to you?

Or, perhaps refuse to work and don't pay taxes? I've like to hear your thoughts on how we can prevent our government from donating money to the CEO Christmas bonus fund.

I was not aware that the mayor got a Christmas bonus ... I do know that he is spending time in jail. Perhaps that is why the city needs $10 billion.

If we let one city get away with this ... we would have a long list of cities that would come to the trough.

I say we just abandon the city and force them to move to the country.

As an environomentalist ... I hate the damage to the environoment that cities cause. It is better to spread apart. Go to the country.

I was talking about AIG and co... a bit off topic. The point remains the same. How much of an immediate choice do we have in the matter?

I guess we could fence off Detroit and place foreclosure signs on it.

We are told that we should all flee to the hills. That is what I am promoting for those Detroitites rather than the bailin of my money.

But bailing out cities is a new precedent.

Well, you could say the same thing about Toyota in the past. The first car that Toyota released was a disaster. And it went on depending on government props for years, until it finally flourished into what it is today. Without government protectionism Toyota would be nothing.

Yet, listening to Bush speaking today, I think we need to stop pretending to have free market capitalism. We are ways from it.

The topic of this thread is not about a company ... it is about a city. I think there is a difference.

From a financial perspective, there is no difference.

Cities employ people, who provide services for the taxpayers (customers). In that respect, city governments are acting as financial institutions... or companies. Otherwise, why would we even be talking about bailout?

I don't think we should be. Just let them close up shop. Move to the suburbs.
