Auto dealers to ask Legislature for Sunday sales ban

December 5, 2008

Associated Press

GLADSTONE, Ore. -- Oregon's struggling auto dealers plan to ask the Legislature to impose "blue laws" prohibiting car sales on Sunday

The day off would help them cut costs during an economic downturn that has already put 19 Oregon dealerships out of business this year. Nationally, sales of domestic cars declined more than 35 percent in 2008.

Greg Remensperger, executive vice president of the Oregon Automobile Dealers Association, told The Oregonian his members strongly favor the measure.

"No question, there's some troubled times out there," Remensperger said.

It's unclear if legislators will take to the idea. The plan wouldn't cost the state anything, but lawmakers already have a full plate when their session starts next month.

A spokesman for House Majority Leader Dave Hunt, D-Gladstone, said he hadn't heard of the proposal and didn't know enough about it to comment.

Eleven other states have a similar prohibition on Sunday auto sales.

Among the dealerships to close in recent months is the Gary Worth dealership in Gladstone. After 49 years, it ceased operations Oct. 31.

"It was very difficult," said Mike McManus, whose father and grandfather co-founded the dealership. "It just got to the point it wasn't fun anymore."

In Medford, Lithia Motors, which operates 98 stores in a number of different states, has slashed its payroll by 1,000 people, through the sales of a number of dealerships and downsizing.

"I've been through six recessions and this is as bad as any of them," said Sid DeBoer, Lithia chairman and chief executive.

If lawmakers don't approve the restriction on Sunday sales, Oregon dealers could opt for a voluntary pact among themselves. Dealers, however, figure a state law is needed to ensure that nobody takes advantage of the others' closure.

Hmmmmmmm......why not close on the weekend entirely?

THAT, I could live with......

And I could also see where businesses be closed on the weekend....like the old days....

So, dealers want a level playing field? I don't see why voluntary closure's wouldn't work. I mean, if most close on Sunday, then only those willing to work on that day will make sales. If only those who work on that day survive, isn't that the "free market economy" at work? And isn't that what this country's business market is founded on?

If there's too many dealerships, then some will have to close. How is that such a hard thing to understand? I'm not saying I want this to happen, or that I'm glad, or that I want people to lose jobs. However, if there's no demand for a product, why on earth would we continue to produce, sell, and service something no one wants?

Why do we need a law to not open on sunday? Is there a law that makes them be open or what? Seems odd to me.

Folks...get real...get with the program. This law has nothing do to with anything except the economy. It's about money. The law is already there and these folks are just taking advantage of it.

The Sunday law you need to worry about will be from those who reject "everlasting gospel". At that time such legislation will be in opposition to the restored gospel. At that time the Sabbath will be a symbol of justification by faith. That time has not come. First the gospel must be restored. 2nd there will be a shaking both in the SDA church and in the other denominations. Those who opposes the message will enact legislation. That's future.

Chill,

Yeah, agreed.

Any idea of when that will happen?

Any idea of how it wil start, or who will be the backing force?

How far in the "future" is this from happening?

What can I do to hasten this event?

since none of us know the day nor the hour...I think it is safe to say we always need to be ready..i.e. be actively working for God...telling people about the good news. However, we can get so focused on "scary things" that we don't have time for "things that are of utmost importance"...we must occupy till Jesus comes.

So, maybe not in terms of hours or days, but any remote idea of years?

What will the shaking be like? Will we only be able to tell that it's happened with hindsight?

How do we restore the gospel?

About 20 years ago when I was shopping for a vehicle I happened to notice that most of the auto dealerships here were open on Saturday, but not on Sunday. However, there were a few that were open on Sunday. This frustated me because I didn't have time on the weekend to get to the auto dealerships I most desired to deal with. I was then told that it is because of a Texas blue law that allows dealerships to be open on either Saturday or Sunday, but not both days. That was the first time I've actually seen a blue law in action.

I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.

The point is that it really doesn't matter WHEN the time is. We are to be ready NOW. Just pretend that the time we have is One Second.

Yes. Sunday laws have been upheld nationally by our Supreme Court for years.

Ok, so no matter the time. Why do we need to know what's going to happen at the end then? I mean, what can we gain by knowing what will happen in the end of times, if we don't know when it will be?

If we live each and every moment as if it's our last, then why even discuss the things involved in the last days. If we are to be ready, then why did Sister White give such detailed information about that time? Why would the bible go into such depth about the end of the world as we know it?

Sorry, this is off subject, but I don't know how else to ask.

The signs are for those who need their faith strengthened. When they see the signs being fulfilled ... they will be encouraged to know that God's word is true. We are not to know the time of His return. No man does. Well ... Ellen White was the only one who was told. But, the rest of us are to accept it by faith that He is coming soon.

I didn't know that Sister White was given the time of our Lord's return.

Did she write about it?

If so, when, and where can I find this info?

Thanks in advance.
