Low Sodium Christians

Has anyone ever eaten low sodium crackers? They are rather plain to say the least. But I do buy them to eat with peanut butter or Mexican salsa. However they remind me of times in my life when I have been a low sodium Christian. Can anyone relate with that?

"Low Sodium Christians" - A good sermon title, I think. High-sodium Christians would make others thirsty for Living Water.

Sometimes all that high-sodium Christians do is give people high blood pressure.

What is the ideal amount of salt that should be added to food?

Enough to bring out and complement the natural flavour of the food?

Or a quantity that makes you take one mouthful and exclaim, "Wow, that's salty!" My feeling is that once you can taste the salt more than the background flavour of the food, you have added too much salt.

When my husband and I were in the US last year, we had a little object lesson in this regard.

One day we were at the San Diego Zoo and we bought some of those big soft pretzel-like buns for lunch. They were coated in a liberal sprinkling of rock salt crystals. I thought, "These should be nice and salty, like the pretzels we know and love back home."

I took one bite and had to spit it out as I felt nauseated straight away. All I could taste was salt. It was like eating solid salt. So I scraped the salt crystals off the pretzel and tried again. Still impossible to eat - even the dough had so much salt in it that it was like chewing on a block of salt.

Even with my Aussie fondness for Marmite and all things salty, I just could not stomach it.

Pondering about it later, it made me think of the "Christians = salt" analogy.

There are some Christians (I'm sure we all know them), whom you look at and immediately think "They're Christians." Even before you speak to them or interact with them, you just know that they're going to be "salty." There are large volumes of "salt" coating the surface.

But once you have "tasted" them, it is just too much - they have no flavour of their own (seasoned and made more palatable by the right amount of salt)...it is just salt, salt and more salt.

It is impossible to swallow and digest that much salt - you will either vomit or develop high blood pressure. So you spit it out. And perhaps develop a distaste for anything salty in the future.

Just my $0.02 worth. (random thoughts on my day off!)
