The quote has to do with the first advent of Christ, which happened according to God's time-table. Daniel 9: 24-27 gives proof that Christ came right on schedule and that Jesus died on schedule. The Second Coming is not according to "time" but according to condition. The Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy give proof that Christ's second coming has been delayed and that it will occur when a certain spiritual condition is met. It's not true that "a certain number of Adventist" must reach a particular level of perfection before Christ will come again. What will happen is that God's people will be sealed with the seal of God and give the Loud Cry before the close of human probation. No one will be sealed with the seal of God who is deliberately holding on to, and practicing, sin. People knowingly practicing sin at that time will be passed by. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

That is an extremely small portion of the offshoot SDA church mainly "Adventistas Reformistas" movement in some hispanic circles and maybe "Shepherd's Rod" who think the 144000 are the only ones who will be saved. God has delayed his coming as he wants to save as many as possible...i.e. he wants as many as possible to have the opportunity to hear about Him and make a decision as he would never force anyone. And the SOP teaches that Christ could have returned before our day. The context of your SOP statement is that we should not put off preparing for His return. In saying this, Ellen White is not denying what she said several times, that Christ would have come in the late 1800s if the church had been prepared. Notice the statement in full context below-- God gives no one a message that it will be ten or twenty years before this earth's history shall close. If it were forty or one hundred years, the Lord would not authorize anyone to proclaim it. He would not give any living being an excuse for delaying the preparation for His appearing. He would have no one say, as did the unfaithful servant, "My Lord delayeth his coming," for this leads to reckless neglect of opportunities and privileges to prepare for that great day. Some people feel it gives them reason to put off preparation. Some people feel it gives them reason to put off preparation. No Christian would put it off .... If the person puts off knowing the Lord ... they are not a Christian. For we are to be ready NOW. The time of the Lord's coming has no bearing on it what so ever. We need to encourge all to know the Lord as their Saviour NOW. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won.
