fccool Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I've heard many reports how great wine is because it contains antioxidants and etc, but these don't mention that alcohol is toxic and that overall result is more damage than good. But, I think I'm preaching to the choir here. Quote
Sulla Posted December 27, 2008 Author Posted December 27, 2008 One reason I took note of this was that my nonchristian friend is was going on about how healthy wine is for you:) Quote
Moderators Bravus Posted December 27, 2008 Moderators Posted December 27, 2008 1. Wine has a lot more ingredients in it than just alcohol, and it's probably those ingredients that do both the good and the harm. Some of those are found in unfermented grape juice, but not all of them. 2. A balanced approach is necessary. If we're going to talk about this study, we need to be honest enough to also talk about the studies that show the benefits (just as those promoting the benefits should also acknowledge this study). There is no scientific knockout punch either way on this issue: in the end we need to say "On balance, I choose to abstain", rather than WINE GIVES YOU CANCER!!! Quote Truth is important
Dr. Shane Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Wine is much more beneficial at preventing heart disease than cancer. However even there, too much wine can cause heart disease. Countries that drink wine more often, like France and Italy, also have higher rates of alcohol-related cancer. If preventing cancer or heart disease is our goal, there are better ways to do that than drinking wine. A wine company started an advertising campaign in the US promoting wine as preventing heart disease and the FDA put a stop to it as false advertising. While the actual claims in the advertising were true, the FDA ruled that the overall message from the advertising was that wine will promote better health and that claim cannot be substantiated. Interestingly after this ruling by the FDA, a group of vegetarians tried to get the slogan "Milk, It does a body good" banned under the same reasoning. What they discovered is that the FDA does not have jurisdiction over the dairy industry. The USDA does and part of the USDA's purpose is to promote the dairy industry. So regardless if it is true or not, we may still be hearing "Milk, it does a body good" for some time now. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Sulla Posted December 27, 2008 Author Posted December 27, 2008 If you look at the research you can get all the good things from wine in other sources and at higher doses. Quote
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted December 27, 2008 Administrators Posted December 27, 2008 Yep! Balance, moderation and it all depends on how you look at all the evidence. It kind of reminds of of the report on the dangers and risks associated with Dihydrogen Monoxide - a very common substance proven absolutely to be fatal if inhaled even in relatively small quantities... But people still think they can't live without it and make all kinds of claims as to its benefits... Even though its performance enhancing properties for athletes are well established, no athletic association or governing body will ban it. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
Moderators John317 Posted December 27, 2008 Moderators Posted December 27, 2008 When alcoholics die and are given autopsies, they invariably have remarkably clear veins and arteries. Unfortunately, their livers and kidneys, without which no man can live very long, are almost always worthless. Members phkrause Posted December 28, 2008 Members Posted December 28, 2008 dgrimm60 when they do those tests on wine all the good they get from them is from the grapes. Because when they do the tests without the alcohol the results are the same on the benefits. Besides we all know that alcohol kills cells and does alot of damage to the liver and other parts. That's why the bible speaks out about not drinking strong drinks. I'm not going to say anyone can drink or not. I just choose not to. Besides the benefits of wine don't override the non-benefits. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

fccool Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Would you consider obesity as dangerous/more dangerous than a glass of wine a week? Quote
Dr. Shane Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Two glasses of wine a week has been shown to increase the risk of colon and breast cancer. One glass might be safe. Obesity is clearly linked to heart disease and can reduce the body's resistance to cancer. So I would be inclined to say obesity is more dangerous than one glass of wine per week. Of course the safest path is avoiding both. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
fccool Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I guess, the followed up question is ... if the OT times would be today and God gave a set of "clean/unclean" foods for Israel. Which substances do you think would not make it? - Diet Soda with Aspartame and etc... - Sugar saturated cereals - Pre-fabricated products extremely high in saturated fat - Candy bars - Fast Food products, such as McBurgers and Wendy triple cheesy fries. - Starbucks coffee and steroids The reason I ask, is because we are so hung up on a couple of unhealthy habits, but in reality... a person who smokes and exercises regularly is better off than a person who does not smoke and is a couch potato. Which leads to some terrible double standards that does not present themselves well when talking about the issues of clean and unclean substances to Non-Adventists. Do we justify eating the health damaging products, or do we avoid them all together to keep the consistency of the message? Quote
Moderators Bravus Posted December 28, 2008 Moderators Posted December 28, 2008 Just to clarify, I have no particular brief for drinking wine. I have a brief for telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in spreading our messages to the world. Quote Truth is important
fccool Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 That would be fairly difficult in environment where truth is what you believe to be such. Truth is not necessarily a belief, just like belief is not necessarily a truth. Just a general statement. Quote

The health message, if followed, would preclude drinking or eating or doing anything that does damage to our health, including lack of exercise. As a church, we obviously haven't done enough to teach or practice the knowledge we have about these things. We have a lot of work to do. Members phkrause Posted December 28, 2008 Members Posted December 28, 2008 I agree with your post. There are other things that are as bad if not much worst than wine. I would be for a well balanced diet, and eating all good and natural food that God intended for us to eat. As far as your list of clean and unclean foods, I think this had to do with meat eating. But I get what you are saying. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Actually for those that have Adventist TV they would know that our church does address all of these issues. I saw an Adventist doctor on The Hope Channel talking exactly about this thing. He was talking about the importance of exercise and stated exactly what is stated in the above quote. The church is addressing these issues but we can take a cattle prod to couch potatoes and make them work out. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
