Stan Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Have (now owned by Kelloggs) once again jacked up their prices, by a percentage that far exceeds inflation or the CPI. They have cancelled the frozen slices, which so many of our members use. They have cancelled so many foods that our Seniors have depended upon. Even on my amazon store, www.adventistfoodstore.com frichik has gone from the high $20.'s ($27?? but not sure) now to 47.19 for a case. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted January 2, 2009 Members Posted January 2, 2009 I read somewhere that the price of soybeans/soybean oil has skyrocketed for some reason. aldona Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Quote: It is our wisdom to prepare simple, inexpensive, healthful foods. Many of our people are poor, and healthful foods are to be provided that can be supplied at prices that the poor can afford to pay. It is the Lord's design that the poorest people in every place shall be supplied with inexpensive, healthful foods. (1902) 7T 125, 126. When I was a poor student on a limited income I never bought meat substitutes and other similar "health foods." I just couldn't afford them. current prices in Australian $: 1 pack of instant noodles = from about 20 cents 1 can of sardines in tomato sauce = 50 cents 1 can of baked beans in tomato sauce = 50 - 70 cents 1 can of plain boiled beans or lentils = $1 1 can of Sanitarium (SDA brand) soya beans in tomato sauce = over $3 1 can of Sanitarium meat substitute (Nutmeat, Nutolene, Rediburger etc) = $3 - $4 or more I have been to Adventist cooking classes and heard some of the ladies talk about how guilty they felt at not being able to support Sanitarium by buying their foods more often, because of the price. We have been conditioned to think that it is our duty as consumers to sacrifice to support the health food business, not vice-versa! aldona Quote www.asrc.org.au (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Melbourne)Helping over 2000 refugees & asylum seekers each monthIMSLP/Petrucci Music LibraryThe Public Domain Music Score Library - Free Sheet Music DownloadsLooking for classical sheet music? Woody Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 This brings up a question in my mind ... Is the church in the vege food business? I think like you said ... that the vege food business is owned by non SDA groups like Kellogg. The same would be said about books. The ABC is not owned by the church is it? Do people think that the church should actually get involved in these businesses? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Dr. Shane Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Great post Aldona!!! The price is most likely driven by supply and demand. If the price has been hiked up it is likely due to demand falling. With little demand the price has to go up in order for the company to make a profit. These same foods may be eliminated if they the profit margins do not come in. Loma Linda and Worthington Foods have long produce vege foods that are highly processed, low fiber and high fat. Other companies are now "cleaning their clock". Products like Boca Burgers and Garden burgers are producing tasty products using natural ingredients high in fiber and low in fat. Most people that eat these products are not vegetarians. They are people with medical conditions requiring them to eat less meat. I can tell you some of my favorite meat substitutes: Pinto beans boiled with onion and garlic. Blend them in a blender, bake them for 15 to 20 minutes. Serve them with brown rice at dinner. Mix in some steamed, diced onions and serve them with breakfast hashbrowns. Mix them cooked, diced potatoes, roll them in a wrap and have a breakfast burrito. Google "lentil loaf" for another fine meat substitute. Oatmeal burgers are another good one. Mix oatmeal with egg whites, onion, garlic and a little salt and fry with a light coat of oil. Play with other spices for taste. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... bygjymbo Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Here's who owns the website, but it still isn't clear on who owns the actual ABC's What is an ABC? AdventistBookCenter.com is the online store for a world-wide network of Christian bookstores called Adventist Book Centers®, or ABCs. The site is owned jointly by two Seventh-day Adventist publishers, Pacific Press® and Review and Herald® Publishing. All the materials on the site are published or distributed by these two publishers. The publishers maintain the site, and the Adventist Book Centers® provide the fulfillment services. Quote
bygjymbo Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Got it. Looks like the North American Division of the SDA church. Sorry about the format, I cut and pasted from .pdf. OUR HERITAGE The Adventist Book Center was founded 131 years ago on June 6, 1869 by Stephen Nelson Haskell, a pioneer evangelist and administrator. It was called “The Vigilant Missionary Society” and was designed for the purpose of supplying literature to the young Church. One year later, on November 6, 1870, the name was changed to “Tract and Missionary Society” and also became part of the New England Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. In 1926, the name “Book and Bible House” was selected and, in 1972, the name “Adventist Book Center” was adopted by the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists. inkie Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 I seldom use Tuno but used my last one from the freezer for a special Christmas appetizer. Now I cannot get it anymore. I am VERY upset and disappointed. Enough that I wrote to them about it. So far, no answer! If anyone knows of a good substitute for the frozen Tuno, please let me know. Quote
Marie Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 It is too bad that these things are happening. I thought they were way too high for a long time now, and to have it raise even higher means I won't be using it at all. But on a slightly different angle of it, these man made "health" foods are not the best for us at all either, even tho better than meat. It may be a good time for us to educate ourselves in making our own Vegetarian veggie meats. We sure have enough cook books to help us do this. Some times to loose one things opens the doors to something better. Marie Quote In His Love, Marie
Jerry D Thomas Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 The ABCs are owned by the church. Many of the local Adventist Book Centers are owned by the local conference. Others are owned and operated by Pacific Press. Pacific Press is owned by the General Conference, as is the Review and Herald Publishing Association. They jointly own adventistbookcenter.com, the online portal to the stores. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Makes no difference to me. I never buy those things anyway. Such highly processed foods aren't "healthy" by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, hydrolyzed soy is toxic. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Woody Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Interesting. Perhaps it is that each store is like a franchise and independently owned. I am not sure where I got this idea or impression. tracer Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Guess tradition is a powerful thing! Vege-foods are not HEALTH FOODS and maybe we're better off without them. After having major health challenges a few years ago I've tried to limit highly processed foods (which vege foods are) and go to a "whole foods, whole" concept. That's what the Bible teaches. Not only is it healthier (you might have to learn how to cook more vegetables, herbs and spices in a creative way) but it's cheaper too. Check out the Dean Ornish, John McDougall websites aand read the China Diet. These folks are not SDA's and they advocate a lot healthier diet than we do and they don't have "the health message" to support them. Trust me, though, they know about it and I'm sure are surprised that Adventists insist on eating vege foods when there are healthier options available to us. I was raised on fry chick, nutmeat and all the rest but I much prefer and feel better on what my wife and I now eat. Want to be even more extreme? Check out http://www.goneraw.com/ and you'll be able to add some amazing food to your menu plan that is not only healthy but amazingly tasty. Now you don't have to go raw (living food) to be healthy but this is pretty amazing. The challenge for most of us is that we have never learned to cook from scratch (which we probably will all be doing sometime in the near future) so it's easy to be overwhelmed. Trust me, I know that all too well. Don't have time to cook that way...in our house we can have a meal ready in 15-20 minutes from scratch! Give it a try and you'll save money, feel better and be the envy of your friends. Good luck and God bless! Have some questions my wife volunteered answer questions at to 4urhealth@gmail.com. Members phkrause Posted January 3, 2009 Members Posted January 3, 2009 The website link looks real good. Thanks. I agree with your post about going back to the diet our Lord gave us in the beginning. As far as the vege foods you mentioned, I think those were originally made for replacing meat. A lot of the vege food is alot better now than before. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
