Bypassing the pirates.....

I do not believe there are any reports of Jesus laughing, or smiling for that matter.

I believe we can conclude that He drew others - children and adults - to Him, and

I doubt that would have happened if He was sombre and down at the mouth all the time.

“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them." - John 17:13

"I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." - John 15:11

I read a wonderful and delightful book sometime ago entitled Jesus, Man of Joy by Sherwood Eliot Wirt. This book influenced the joyous, smiling potrayal of Jesus by actor, Bruce Marchiano, in the Visual Bible - Matthew

It is hard to imagine a man of joy not smiling and laughing.

Jesus made at least ONE joke in the NT....Anyone have a tree in your eye of late....so why do we complain about the specks when we have beams in our eyes?

I know a lot of guys who have been one, but not to many who have had actual conversations with asses...

If you are really conserned about where these are, you can look them up....I know you can find them

Check out this smiling Jesus that Ellen White saw in one of her dreams--

Chapter Title: 3: Beginning of Public Labours

DREAM OF SEEING JESUS

I tried to shield myself from His gaze, feeling unable to endure His searching eyes; but He drew near with a smile, and laying His hand upon my head, said, "Fear not." The sound of His sweet voice thrilled my heart with a happiness it had never before experienced. I was too joyful to utter a word, but, overcome with emotion, sank prostrate at His feet. While I was lying helpless there, scenes of beauty and glory passed before me, and I seemed to have reached the safety and peace of heaven. At length my strength returned, and I arose. The loving eyes of Jesus were still upon me, and His smile filled my soul with gladness. His presence awoke in me a holy reverence and an inexpressible love. John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Anyone seen the movie 'The Name of the Rose' (contains some elements not all here might enjoy) - without giving away too many spoilers, its plot turns on the question of Jesus and humour.

I find it rather pathetic that we even need to ask the question. Was Jesus wholly man and wholly God? We know both man and God have senses of humour, so how could he *not* laugh and smile at times, even as he knew he had a serious and fatal mission to complete?

Seeking to keep ourselves and others from laughing seems to me one of the deeper pathologies of Christianity.

Good post Bravus. Doesn't it say in Proverbs that laughter is a good medicine? So I would agree that Jesus must of had times of laughter. Even though he had a special road to travel.

Have you read the book? Umberto Eco is one of my favorite modern authors. I love the complexity of his narrative style and how he involves the reader in the story.

I did see the film, staring Sean Connery, and it's pretty good, but not nearly as good as the book. The book doesn't contain very much about Jesus and humor. It a murder mystery set in the middle ages.

I have never known any Christians who discouraged all laughter or smiling. Ellen White talks against foolishness, but that is totally different.

Agreed on the book - loved it, and have read most of the rest of his novels, though 'Baudolino' keeps defeating me.

The book also turns on the suppression of Aristotle's book on comedy, for religious reasons...

OK, since you like Eco, you'd probably also really like a few books by Thomas Pynchon, especially, "V" and Gravity's Rainbow. GR is one of the most important books of the twentieth century. It can be difficult reading at times but if you keep plowing through it, you will suddenly see great light. It is kind of like studying a language inductively that way. It all seems confusing and you don't know where you are until all of a sudden it all starts making sense. The narrative style was heavily influenced by film and by cartoons.

I think the only Pynchon I've read is 'The Crying of Lot 49' - which is odd, since William Gibson is my favourite author and he cites Pynchon as his major influence. Must dig out the two you mentioned and read them.

Jesus actually used quite a bit of humor in his teaching, although it doesn't necessarily come across in text, and can sound like dry wit or even sarcasm. But I bet 'camel through the eye of a needle' and 'straining out gnats and swallowing camels' and 'dust in their eyes, logs in yours' and a number of other things like searching all day for a single lost sheep or lost coin were said with a twinkle in his eyes: deep meanings but accessible and engaging for everyone.

A favorite course I took was one in which we read and discussed all of Pynchon's works. The Crying of Lot 49 was one of his first. I really enjoyed that book. It's set in Los Angeles. Characters are constantly thinking they see "signs" or pointers that show the way to something bigger. That theme continues in "V" and Gravity's Rainbow. By the way, if you like humor, be ready to laugh a lot, although both books also contain terrible tragedy, some of the worst in the twentieth century.

How would "rope through the eye of a needle" sound? That may be what he actually said. Jesus spoke Aramaic, and in that language "rope" and "camel" are almost identical.

Supposing he'd said "rope," would that take anything away from the humor?

You sure that wasn't someone dressed up to look like a kangaroo? Do they really do that?!! Smart animals if they do. Those aussies better be careful or the kangaroos will take over.
