No more sacrifice for my sin?

Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth....

Willful sin is here described as knowing the truth. The question is "what truth"? Is Paul talking about the law since "sin is the transgression of the law"?

there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.

Whatever this "sin" is the willful practice of it means " there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins" [plural], but rather judgment.

28 Anyone who has rejected the law of Moses [the first, five books of the OT] dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

Under the law it was "obey and live, disobey and die". That is "the law of Moses" or the Old Covenant. So "the truth" isn't about the law. Then what?

29 Of how much worse punishment [worse then anyone who rejected the law of Moses] do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

So willful sin belongs to,

1] Those who have knowingly "trampled the Son of God underfoot"

2] Those who have counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing.

3] Those who have said no to the Spirit of grace.

# 1 refers to the rejection of Christ as our only ticket to heaven.

# 2 refers to Christ’s life laid down in death or that which set us apart (sanctified us).

# 3 Refers to the unpardonable sin. Turn to John 16:9 “He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me….

This can be seen in the immediate context of Hebrews 10:9

In Christ you already have 3 things:

1] You have been justified. According to Romans 7:4 you died to the law in the life of Christ. The justice of the law is satisfied.

2] You have been sanctified because "in Christ" He defeated "the law of sin" that resides in you. He never sinned, not even by a thought. And you were in Him. Therefore you already stand sanctified "in Christ".

3] And lastly, you stand glorified "in Christ". This means you have been delivered from a] the law that justly condemns you, 2] your sin nature and 2] the presence of sin.

Rob, I kind of got lost in what you wrote, sorry, but now I think I understand. I use to think that it was saying that if I sin after becoming a Christian there was no more hope for me. (I really didn't believe that I understood this correctly, but I was never really sure.)

But what you are saying above is that when a person learns about Jesus and His sacrifice, learns about what sin is, knows what he needs to do and yet refuses to allow the blood of Jesus (Jesus' death in place of our death) to remove his sins then there isn't anyother sacrifice (there isn't anyother way) for him to be saved from the judgement and the death that is coming. Am I hearing you right?

Yes! Let's read it again:

and insulted the Spirit of grace?

The willful sin here involves rejecting what the Son of God did in your behalf!

It involves you rejecting the "the blood of the covenant" (His life laid down in death for you).

It involves you rejecting the Spirit's voice convicting you that you are a sinner and need Christ's righteousness.

For such sin there's no hope, but only condemnation - the curse of the law.

Kind of interesting how The Message translation puts it [never saw this before]:

"If we give up and turn our backs on all we've learned, all we've been given, all the truth we now know, we repudiate Christ's sacrifice and are left on our own to face the Judgment—and a mighty fierce judgment it will be!"
