I would not like to get his heat bill!!! (He didn't either.)

Our furnace quit working twice in the past week, and the service guys came both times. The one that came the first time couldn't find anything wrong. It had already started running again just before he got here. It's a high-efficiency furnace, with only a PVC pipe for exhaust, and a drain line for condensation that forms when it runs. If either one is plugged, the furnace won't run. He thought that maybe it had an airlock in the drain that cleared before he came.

The second time, a different serviceman came. He found out it was the thermostat, so he replaced it. We have a service contract, so it didn't cost us anything.

My husband told a friend about this today. This friend said he wished his could be fixed so cheaply. He has a heat pump, with an electric backup heating unit for when the pump doesn't bring in enough heat. The compressor on the heat pump quit working, but he didn't know it, since they were still getting heat. Then the electric bill came: $900! It just about gave him a heart attack. scared

And to make matters worse, when the service people came, they said the compressor will cost $2000 to fix. I'm glad we don't have a heat pump!
