The Stock Market tanked over 100 points today ... demonstrating a loss of confidence in the Obama Plan and leadership.

Ah yeah... it had nothing to do with the fact that it's reporting season and several banks reported multibillion losses, of course.

There are some great buys out there. I got some good deals earlier this week. I wish I had more money to buy more stocks.

I think that it's a good idea to stash some cash, food, and maybe some gold, if you can. It won't be long and most people's retirement accounts are about as valuable as a handful of air. I think it's good for most people to keep working. Many die shortly after retirement because they lack things to do. My dad died about 3 years after my mom passed because of boredom.

I agree...we should all be living in the Country, raising as much of our food as we can...and preserving what we can for the next season, but I don't believe in stock piling....it will just turn to worms or be stolen from us, in fact someone may decide to take your life to get your food....

Instead of worrying so much about the physical preparation, we need to concentrate more on the spiritual preparation...that is what really matters.

Young men and women should regard a good character as a capital of more value than gold or silver or stocks. It will be unaffected by panics and failures, and will bring rich returns when earthly possessions shall be swept away. The youth need a higher, nobler view of the value of Christian character. Sin blinds the eyes and defiles the heart. Integrity, firmness, and perseverance are qualities which all should seek earnestly to cultivate; for they clothe the possessor with a power which is irresistible, a power which makes him strong to do good, strong to resist evil, strong to bear adversity. It is here that true excellence of character shines forth with the greatest luster. {4T 655.4}

HEY ALL

I am not saying that one should buy stocks or not but

in the KENTUCKY-TENNESSEE about 25 percent of pastors and

teachers in this conference had there retirement in stocks

and they are not getting a good return on their retirement...

some told me they were even losing money now....

as for stocking food that is not a good idea for as

in the time of the Israel when they tried to store the

mania the worms eat it....

dgrimm60

Right now the ONLY thing that is making money is Treasury Bills. I switched my retirement to buying up T bills only for now. T Bills are making 12 to 13 percent interest per year right now. Only investment that is making money.

Yes I read somewhere or heard that that was the way to go.

I agree with being spiritually prepared. It still doesn't hurt to be physically prepared either. There's the little time of trouble, then the big one. Stashing cash, gold, food, etc. may help in the small time. During the big time, only relying on Jesus will be the answer (as it is now).

Tallmark,

Physical and spiritual go hand in hand. If you are not prepared physically... you are in a position to make compromises.

My Grandparents lived through the Great Depression. We complain about this being the end of times but compared to the Great Depression this is NOTHING.

During the Great Depression bank after bank failed. Stock market fell over 80 percent in value. Unemployment was over 30 percent nationwide. Wages fell through the floor.

That was far far worse than what we have with this current market downturn. Sure it will get worse. Unemployment will go to 10 percent or higher but by 2010 it will turn arround experts say. It may be 2014 before the market recovers all the value it lost but still this is NOT the end of the world. Not yet.

So lets not say the sky is falling. Yes we all will go through rough times. Many of us may lose our jobs. Some may lose their homes but we will survive.

Christ will come but I doubt this is heralding his coming any more than any other recession did in the past.

Hmmmm.....not to dispute too much, but NPR said that there were 25% unemployment and 25% were part time employees. So, 50% of the country was affected by unemployment,,,,,

Most women didn't work during the 1930s either. So only about half the nation was working when the Depression started. When we hear about the unemployment rate that is for those looking for work. So if we were to count the women not looking for work during the Great Depression, the unemployment rate would have been closer to 70%.

Still even with those figures one would have to say we are nowhere near that at this time.

I have read that most of the unemployment is people below 30. Unemployment in that age group is close to 20 percent. Where unemployment of people over 50 is around 6 percent. Why, because corporations want to keep the experienced workers who will stay with the company and not move around. They will need the experienced people who know the company well and can build the company up faster than training new inexperienced people. Young people tend to quit and move to a new job ever three years or so. Older people are settled and will stay at a job they like for decades if the employor will keep them.

So if you are over 40 your job is more secure than if you are below 30.

HEY CYBERGUY

THAT is not always the case about under age 30 vs over age 40/50

maybe companies are getting read of older people since the

are paid more when companies pay younger people less money

many companies are encouraging older worker to take and

early retirement....

dgrimm60

That does not seem to the case this time. True in past downturns they did that but most companies are keeping their older employees as they are experienced and loyal and are less likely to leave than younger employees. Plus the younger people are less experenced and by they time you train them they move on to higher pay with different companies.

Companies want to bounce back from this recession quickly. They need the older more experienced employees who knows the company well to do that.

Hey dgrimm I have to agree with you. I have seen more over the age of 50 being laid off. This way they get rid of the large salaries and hire younger and pay less. The problem with that for us 60 and over is no one wants to hire you because of our age. And also they figure we are going to retire soon. I think that they should allow us to retire with full benefits now. Don't you think????
