Administrators Gail Posted January 28, 2009 Administrators Posted January 28, 2009 How does it feel when someone says that to you? BUT- Is there a time when "sucking it up" or "eating the loss" is the right thing to do? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted January 28, 2009 Members Posted January 28, 2009 depends on the situation, but my initial reaction would be OTOH, one must choose one's battles carefully Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Administrators Gail Posted January 28, 2009 Author Administrators Posted January 28, 2009 Pam, you are the emoticon queen! LOL Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Liz Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 While "sucking it up" may, at times, be the right thing to do, I don't think it is ever the appropriate thing to say to someone else---ever. fccool Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 While "sucking it up" may, at times, be the right thing to do, I don't think it is ever the appropriate thing to say to someone else---ever. This is ussaly what men say to each other. And I think it's appropriate if you know the person, and if you know what his/her reaction would be. I at times say that to my wife (lovingly). And she knows that translation of this would be "C'mon hons, now is not the time to unglue, now is the time to stand up and be tough" And she'd say ... I know... you are right, I'm acting like a baby. There is a time and place for "tough love", but you have to be careful who you are saying it too, and the situation they are in. Quote
Liz Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Well, Fccool, you may have something there. While it might be o.k. to say something like this amongst men, and you get away with saying it to your wife; I am not a man (far from it) and I was raised in the South. Therefore, as a Southern lady, I stand by my original post. Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Administrators Gail Posted January 29, 2009 Author Administrators Posted January 29, 2009 Okay, Liz- Without using those particular, exact words... Is there a time when the message is right? Is there a time when we could even counsel someone to bear the situation, to shoulder it, to carry the pain? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Liz Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Okay, Liz- Without using those particular, exact words... Is there a time when the message is right? Is there a time when we could even counsel someone to bear the situation, to shoulder it, to carry the pain? To me this is different than the original message. If we see someone going through a difficult time and we listen to them, share their pain, help them carry it, and counsel them to keep on keeping on; then we have compassion for our fellow man. However, if we see them going through a difficult time and we say "suck it up"--where is the compassion? And remember difficult times are all relative. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted January 29, 2009 Members Posted January 29, 2009 There was once a time in ER when a patient was being extremely uncooperative... The RN finally said those exact words,"Buck up, Buttercup" to her, and you know - it worked!!! The patient was so startled that someone would say that, that they became the best patient you could ask for. But like has been said, all situations are different... Administrators Gail Posted January 29, 2009 Author Administrators Posted January 29, 2009 LOL Isn't it funny how things go? You just never know... Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
olger Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 There is a place for being directive, just as there is a place for empathy. People who care about people are usually the best at being directive. When a person is stuck on "poor me" mode, empathy can make their problem worse. "Poor me" is a form of pride - a hidden pride. It is far better to lead a person to resolve their self-focus. oG (fcool you made some decent points) Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."
ChildofChrist Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I used to hear folks tell others, "Well, you made your bed, so you get to sleep in it." I always feel that there is a way of helping people that have created their own problems to find an escape. That said, even Christ will allow us to go through trials for our own growth (and He is still with us). Sometimes that is the only way one learns to lean fully on Him. My 6 cents worth. (Accounting for inflation.) Quote Wakan Tanka Kici Un ~~Child of Christ~~
Members phkrause Posted January 31, 2009 Members Posted January 31, 2009 Yes ChildOfChrist good thought. I would add that, if we do say that to someone, I think that God would expect us to maybe help that person out of that bed. Not to say that they shouldn't accept the consequence, they should. But we do need to help were we can. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

(Accounting for inflation.) The thought came to me that perhaps God wants us to go though a trial and here we humans are trying to get the person to not go through them. Points out how little we know what is good. (And no money from me ... not even 6 cents ... due to inflation) Quote May we be one so that the world may be won.
