Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 5, 2009 Members Posted February 5, 2009 With all the recent snow and ice storms, has anyone else had any damage happen? (and we're supposed to get more snow!) I got lucky and my car stayed safe in the garage, but yesterday I noticed that two limbs from my monkey puzzle tree had sunken and fallen onto my rooftop. I'm having to get a landscape expert out here and get them cut down and have the tree pruned back. I'm worried because the monkey puzzle tree spines are razor sharp and could cut my roofing... The landscapers can't get here until early next week though. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Administrators Gail Posted February 5, 2009 Administrators Posted February 5, 2009 One of our neighbours had a large limb fall off his Douglas fir tree onto his eave and that ripped that off. He has since had that very tall tree cut down. We came out of things very well, but we also have large trees on our lot and I keep thinking it's only a matter of time before we suffer some mishap like that. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 5, 2009 Author Members Posted February 5, 2009 Whole towns without power...wow.. that's bad, dgrimm60. I heard that a hardware store got in a shipment of generators back east and there was a huge line-up to buy them before the store opened at 7 AM. This has really been a bad winter for so many people in so many areas of the country. And it isn't over yet. Members phkrause Posted February 5, 2009 Members Posted February 5, 2009 Hey rudywoofs, here in mass we had the worst ice in about 50 years, this was back a few months now. We had tons on tree limbs down in our yard. We had this one tree top that broke off and just missed hitting my tent garage. If it had landed on it, it would have destroyed it. on the other side of the house one tree there also broke in half and right now the very end of it is touching my roof where all the wires come to the house. We cleaned up quite alot, but since than we had 3 more snow storms. And we've also had quite a few days with sub zero weather. Today and yesterday have been zero or below. The ice on my roof is about 5 inch's thick, plus about 8-10 inch's of snow. I can't wait till this starts to melt. What a mess that we be. Yes this has been one long winter already. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

You really got clobbered! The weight on your roof must be in tons! Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. Members phkrause Posted February 5, 2009 Members Posted February 5, 2009 They say that if you have a flat roof you need to make sure you get most of it off. This house was built pretty good. Usually they put about 8 feet between the rafters. This house has 4 feet between them. But you never know what can happen. And just to clarify, I don't have a flat roof. It might have sounded that way from the beginning of my post. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 5, 2009 Author Members Posted February 5, 2009 No, I didn't think you had a flat roof - it just sounded like so much weight on ANY sloping roof! 5 inches of ice and 8-10 inches of snow! Just sounds unreal! Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Members phkrause Posted February 5, 2009 Members Posted February 5, 2009 The ice part is pretty much at the front edges all around. Maybe about 10 inch's up and than it tapers down the farther you go up. I usually try to take the first couple of feet up of snow, off the roof, before it snows again. I didn't do it. So as the snow starts to melt, and than it gets cold like this, it freezes. Its to bad I don't live any closer I'd help with any tree limbs. I had to cut alot around my house. As soon as then spring comes around I'm goner have lots of chainsawing to do. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 18, 2009 Author Members Posted February 18, 2009 Today is the day I get the tree limbs off of my roof. They've been there now for over a month now, but the weather hasn't cooperated every time the landscapers get scheduled to come out here. Today is cold cloudy, and wet, but workable in. At least there's no snow this week!!! Is everyone's snow and ice melting off now in the East and Midwest yet? Members phkrause Posted February 18, 2009 Members Posted February 18, 2009 Yes rudywoofs the snow has just about melted where it wasn't to high. especially on the roofs of home's. But we're expecting another storm later today. I heard that it was snowing and sleeting in NY, so it will be getting here later. Can't wait. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 18, 2009 Author Members Posted February 18, 2009 OH NO! Not another one for you, pk!!!!!!!!!!! Administrators Gail Posted February 18, 2009 Administrators Posted February 18, 2009 Pam, was there any damage from where the branches hit the roof? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 18, 2009 Author Members Posted February 18, 2009 it's hard to tell with this kind of tree. There might be some of the roofing material that got damaged. I hope not. I can't afford to fix that too. The one branch is right along the edge of the eaves, almost like it's growing into the roof. I'm kinda worried about it. I had a new roof put on about 5 years ago, and it's a good one....but stuff like this can really do damage. I'll find out this afternoon when the landscapers do the work. Thanks for asking... Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Administrators Gail Posted February 18, 2009 Administrators Posted February 18, 2009 I hope it is not damaged! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 18, 2009 Author Members Posted February 18, 2009 Got the limbs off the roof and the misc. pruning done on that big tree!!! Everything looked okay on the roof! I'm sure glad it's done! Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. GreatLakesGramma Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Wouldn't your homeowner's insurance pay to fix the roof if there had been damage?
