I think that would be very hard to prove, at least in the US. I am an example of wealth redistribution. The government taxed mostly rich and business to subsidize my public and college education. As a child the government paid for our housing, medical and food - we were on welfare. I came from the poorest of classes. My father abandoned my mother and she worked in a grocery store for minimum wage (which is itself a means of wealth redistribution). I am not rich today but I make over $60k which is above the median American income. And with my total money make-over, courtesy of Dave Ramsey, I will one day very wealthy, unless Jesus comes first or I am killed in some accident or tragic disease. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Moderators Bravus Posted February 17, 2009 Moderators Posted February 17, 2009 That's very easy to prove: all the stats on the gap between the richest and poorest, the proportion of the nations wealth held by the wealthiest and every other measure clearly show the transfer of wealth to the wealthy. Your story is an inspiring one, but it's one of the exceptions. It's the kind of exception that is used to prop up the whole system, but looking at the big picture rather than individual anecdotes show that the system as a whole works best for those at the very top... and ironically damages the real standard of living of those who mostly vote for it. Dr. Shane Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I am open to seeing those statistics. I have never seen any of them. The poverty rate in American has been around 15% (give or take) for many years. I haven't seen any statistics showing the poverty class growing. I have seen stats showing the upper class growing and the middle class shrinking. That only shows that more people are getting rich. It doesn't show that they are getting rich at the expense of the poor. The economic pie grows and as it grows it allows more people to enter into the wealthy class. Now if the middle class was shrinking and the poverty class was increasing we would have a reason for concern. But I have seen no statistics showing that to be the case. If anything, the middle class is buying too much "stuff" on credit so they feel poor because they are strapped with debt. And who are they borrowing money from to buy all this "stuff"? They are borrowing from the rich. So the middle class is increasingly becoming slaves to the rich but it is voluntarily. Middle class people need to cut up their credit cards. Taylor Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I think that while everyone is entitled to their opinions, that maybe we ought to give him a chance, and yes we should have given Bush and Clinton and every other president a chance. They have all made mistakes and they have all kept promises, and they have all done things we don't approve of. At least I haven't ever heard of or observed a perfect president at all times in every aspect. Just my 2 cents And regardless of who is in charge and what mistakes they make..at least we all know how the story ends..we've read the end of the book! :) Quote
