Should demon possessed people be held accountable

John answered that question, and I think he is correct, i.e. not all mentally deranged people are devil possessed. But anyone who is dangerous to society for whatever reason, have to be separated from society, be it prison or mental institution. In this case in which they could not be held accountable/responsible for their action, separation from society is NOT for punishment; it is for the safety of society.

Some mental illnesses ARE curable. Devil-possessed people have been delivered from their devil-possession.

I agree with Neil.

The accountability the original poster is referring to is legal accountability. Should he be treated as a criminal and serve the same legal penalty as anyone would who had no mental issues.

Jesus did not come the first time with civil authority. He could not hold anyone legally accountable with regard to civil law. Instead, he called them to a higher accountability, to God Himself. He did not condemn those who came to him who were open to his message. But he sure did condemn those who came to him to do Satan's work against him. Calling them whitewashed tombs, hypocrites, sons of the devil, generation of vipers, etc. sure sounds like condemnation to me! He didn't soft-pedal his warnings to them.

Yet, even that was in love. He still loved those men, even though they had sold themselves to do evil. Soft words would have had no effect on them. I'm sure he hoped and prayed that those harsh words would get through to some of them.

And while I'm on the subject, though it's a little off the actual subject of this thread, I want to add that society has warped the definition of "love", and most Christians have accepted this false definition, to where it supposedly means accepting anything and everything someone might choose to do, regardless of what God has said about it. This is not love, it is laziness. God has commanded, in the Bible that we MUST strive to turn our brothers/sisters away from sin that will lead to condemnation. It's true that most of the time, the way it is done in the church is actually worse than looking the other way, and will more likely bring condemnation on the accusers than redemption to the accused, but that doesn't change the fact that God has called us to do SOMETHING.

If you had a small child who loved to turn on the burners on the stove, even though he was too small to see the fire, he just loved turning the knobs, would you leave him alone to have his fun? Is that what love is? Absolutely NOT!!! He could burn down the house or, more likely, as he got a little taller and could reach the top of the stove, he could put his hand right into the fire. If you truly loved him, you would do whatever you had to do to break him of the habit of playing with the burner handles, BEFORE something tragic happened.

Devil possession is NOT mental illness. It just looks like it. Most demon possessed people are fully competent mentally. They just have no power to control their own words or actions.

Demon-possessed people should not be taken lightly...

Mark 16:17 Jesus tells us that we'll...

And these signs will accompany those who believe:

In Jesus Name they will drive out demons...

In Jesus Name they will lay their hands on sick people, and they will get well.

I am a very firm believer that Jesus has given us power to cast out demons in His Name.

Also to heal all the sick people that wants healing in Jesus Name will be healed.

Are they saved?

My answer to your question Redwood is: Yes... if...

Romans 10:9-10 is enforced into their life...

That if the demon-possessed person will confess with their mouth, "Jesus is Lord", and believe in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, then that person will be SAVED.

For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are SAVED.

Verse 13 says...

For, "Everyone (demon-possessed or not) everyone who calls upon the Lord will be SAVED.

If more Christians would apply that principle when reviewing their own decisions that have brought pain and injury to others, they would be able to see God's loving justice when finding ourselves in the midst of "hot water".

"Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much."

It is important to remember that when a person makes that confession, he/she is not demon possessed.

"When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!"Luke 15:17 NIV

"And [people] went out to see what had occurred, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right (sound) mind;"Luke 8:35 AMP

"...God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind;"2 Tim 1:7 YLT

"...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."Philippians 1:6 NIV
