Cosmin M. Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Here is a recent video of a sermon at our church.... It is in English because the pastor was Hungarian and spoke very little Romanian so we had a guy from our church translate. Sometimes the cameras move through the crowd. You might see me! I am sitting on the right hand side. Not in front of the choir though! The other side! http://intercer.net/intercer_player.php?id=8939&type=intern Quote

Amelia Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 WOW, that is the first time I have EVER heard Ellen White quoted as part of a service/sermon. How often are her words used in your church Cosmin? In the (Polish) church I grew up in, it was every week - great slabs of EGW re-printed on the overhead projector and used as the backbone of the sermon, with the occasional Bible text thrown in to prove how right EGW was. (explains a lot, doesn't it?? ) Even now, in a church that I would consider middle-of-the-road to slightly liberal, we get EGW quotes mixed interchangeably with Bible texts, sometimes even on Visitors' Day. aldona Quote www.asrc.org.au (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Melbourne)Helping over 2000 refugees & asylum seekers each monthIMSLP/Petrucci Music LibraryThe Public Domain Music Score Library - Free Sheet Music DownloadsLooking for classical sheet music? GreatLakesGramma Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Aldona, I can see why feel as you do about Ellen White. In our church, she is rarely quoted from the pulpit. Very rarely. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
Woody Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Those who quote her from the pulpit don't think very highly of her instructions since she told us not to do that. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Members phkrause Posted March 9, 2009 Members Posted March 9, 2009 I have absolutely no problem with anybody quoting EGW. I listen to what she says and see how it relates or how relevant it is to my situation. I either agree or don't, and than see if it agrees with the Bible. She is there as a guide and pointing us to the Bible. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
GreatLakesGramma Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I don't have a problem with Ellen White being quoted from the pulpit too, so long as the speaker isn't treating her like the authority to end all questions. The source and final authority for all our doctrines is the Bible. I believe that Ellen White was inspired by God, and her writings have been a great blessing to me. But the Bible is the foundation of our faith, not Sister White's writings. Otherwise, we are a cult like some other churches think. Planey Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I couldn't agree with you more, GLG. I have often found preachers in our church will quote EGW to illustrate a point, not as an authority. Often they will cite "One of my favourite authors expresses it this way", or some similar words. In the same way they may quote Jon Paulien or Alden Thompson or even Cliff Goldstein... I have no problem when any writer is quoted in this way, and only the Bible is quoted as an authority. Woody Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I have never heard Jon Paulien or Alden Thompson or even Cliff Goldstein quoted in that manner. IF Jon Paulien or Alden Thompson or even Cliff Goldstein is quoted ... they are named. ONLY Ellen White is referred to as "One of my favourite authors expresses it this way". Personally ... I think it is a cop out. They usually are afraid to mention her name so they quote her this way. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. She is there as a guide and pointing us to the Bible. A few months ago when I went to a nearby SDA church, I heard the pastor quote a well-known Catholic Cardinal as an authority. If we have no objection to quoting a Cardinal or others as a authority, it's makes little sense to object to the authoritative use of someone we as a church believe to be a prophet of God. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

I don't have a problem with quoting EGW as an inspirational writer. I can read her writings now and appreciate what she has to say, without turning her into some kind of infallible God-like (or pope-like) figure that she would never have intended to be. The Bible has to be the final authority. aldona Quote www.asrc.org.au (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Melbourne)Helping over 2000 refugees & asylum seekers each monthIMSLP/Petrucci Music LibraryThe Public Domain Music Score Library - Free Sheet Music DownloadsLooking for classical sheet music? True-believer Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I agree... The Bible is the final authority... The Bible and the Bible ALONE. There is nothing wrong with qouting Ellen White or any other writer or author of books, but as long it points to the Bible. Quote Luke 4:19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

We only mention Ellen White's as an author like the other authors because we don't want to make her higher than the Bible... The Word of God has the final authority. Thankyou Catherine and Aldona!!! Quote Luke 4:19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

But she's certainly a higher authority than Clifford Goldstein. I usually think of it in the same way as Redwood- people are too afraid to say her name, so they just call her "one of my favorite Christian authors". I feel like cringing when I hear people say that because I'm afraid that they really believe she's only a "Christian author". Just say her name! It will not kill you and if you use her writings in the right way people won't think you're in a Ellen White-worshiping cult. It will also prevent her from just being a "good writer". You don't have to say, "We know this is true because the God-breathed Spirit of Prophecy says...". How about, "Ellen White puts it this way..."?
