And if I am going to watch something, I prefer to do it at a time that is convenient to me. Which seldom happens (a convenient time, that is). By the way, when the reporter was shown the faces and asked to pick the ones she'd seen, I took the test too. As soon as she showed the original and altered one together, I chose the one on the right. When she saw the altered one the first time, I didn't feel that it looked right, but chose it tentatively because it was the closest to the one I'd seen. Amelia Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I was a witness to a crime just this past December. I gave a report to the officer on the spot just minutes after he arrived at the scene. A few days later I was called in for a line up. It took me no time at all to pick the guy out. My discription of the guy I gave to the officer exactly matched what he looked like. I even got the make and color of the SUV and license plate number exact. The only thing I couldn't give was the year of the SUV. That is the power of Christian forgiveness. Amelia, I don't know how good of a witness I would actually be. I studied the faces on the show because I was expecting to try to identify them. But even then, I am not so sure I would have still been able to pick the right one if they asked me a week later. GreatLakesGramma Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I thought some more about this subject afterward, and thought of some other problems that could contribute to witness error. Seeing a 2-dimensional photo of a person is not like seeing the 3-dimensional person, live and moving. Accurately identifying someone often has just as much to do with facial expressions, the way their lips move when they talk, how their teeth look when they smile, mannerisms, etc. Photos can't capture those things. I have seen photos of the same person that I could not tell for sure, no matter how carefully I examined them, that they actually were of the same person. A different pose, different hairstyle, different expression, different lighting, can make a world of difference in a 2-dimensional still photo. I would not want to even attempt to positively identify someone from a photograph. Then when you see how lineups are done, the distance between the suspects and the witness can be quite a bit more than during the crime. I would not want to try to identify a suspect from any distance farther than I saw them during the crime. I have many times seen someone from a distance I thought I knew, only to discover they were a stranger when I got closer. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
